Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

This one doesn't make sense to me.
Either you omitted the part about rigging the broken derailleur cable so it held it in the largest cog.. or you actually did the ride in your highest gear at 32x12.

rapid rise mtb derailleur's sit at the highest gear rather than the lowest.

Doh! Forgot about rapid rise. What was that.. 98/99 only?

..lets not confuse 'highest gear' with 'largest cog' however.

Edit: Okay, kill me. I'm WAY out of the MTB loop.
After google image searching, it seems MTB derailleurs are backwards now?

Rapid rise is sweet, the Rivendell guys like it for barcons because you get the same effect from moving each shifter in a given direction.

Someone should rig up something to run 32t in front and like 40t in back. And then climb trees with it? I don't know...

I would see guys on 2:1 ratio bikes having a much better time on the course but I don't want to put an MTB crank on. I've been contemplating putting on a 19 or a 20 freewheel but the other part of me just says I need to get faster and become a better runner.

running is the key to cross.

If anyone remembers that 60-something tooth chainwheel I had, I drilled holes in it to bolt it to a disc brake mount....

Yeah, I test-rode one of their mixtes last time I was at riv and the reversed rear derailleur just freaked me out.

I'm against it.

The gear on my 26" trials bike is 18-15.

Some people run 18-16, but that's just crazy

I've been freewheeling 38x17 around town lately.

It's kinda nice and only occasionally frustrating, but I'm rarely in a hurry.

39/18 on my old freewheel beater pos varsity. I wanted to put a bigger chainring but the threads on the one piece crank were seized so I couldn't get it off.

Bikes: Old-ass gearie hardtail MTB, fix-converted Centurion LeMans commuter, SS hardtail monster MTB

Rode my 32-20 the other day and actually spun out when I was getting set to hit a kicker... kind of an odd feeling. You've just got to suck it up and ride smooth to keep your speed up at that point.
