Can't find a pic of the old Claus Grabke mini, but that's definitely a favorite.

You must have started skating the same year I did.

He might not have been skating hard enough, but you weren't landing right. A stick a month?

I rode really hard. I was also really stupid. I would try anything. I actually tried a gap that went over trees. Didn't land it, and bruised the bottom of my feet, but I tried it.

lol, I love how you think that I must suck. Anyway, I am not going to get into that discussion.

TRaffic Jammer 12-22-06 10:03 AM

now now kids..... as it is after 25 years of skating I dislocated my kneecap after my foot slipped off the tail slowly rolling over flat ground. This was after the session of trickery where one would have thought I would hurt myself. Not knowing how to land properly isn't the same as sucking...so long as I'm not buying supporting your stick habit. Hard, fast, and with altitude doesn't mean it breaks when you hit the ground....feet over screws.

I was getting my boards for free or discount, so I skated them as hard as I could. When I was paying for them or I was broke they lasted me at least a month and a half or two. Plenty of times I went hungry supporting my skate habit. Now I skate so much like a p***y I have had the same board for a year. I didn't say that they all broke after a month either. I would skate 8+ hours a day, everyday. Any board would wear out in a month doing that. Anyway...

ryand 12-22-06 10:27 AM

Pretty much getting boards for free is awesome.

The way kids skate now is they go through at LEAST one board a month.
(Well, the kids who are sponsored anyways)
They don't get rid of boards because they break (well, sometimes they break), they get rid of boards because they are losing pop, flattening out, chipping, not being as stiff, and the grip tape is worn. But mind you these kids skate every day as hard as they can for as long as they can.

When I was skating everyday, I would go through a board a month. Sometimes because they broke, sometimes because I had some spare cash and my board felt like ****. Then I went to college and had to focus on what I was doing. Now a board lasts me two or three months depending on how much I skate and what I am doing.

It doesn't mean I think you suck, it just means you're not landing properly. You might have great style stomping your tricks, who knows? I'm on the opposite side of it, I've been riding 18 years and never broken a board. You might think I suck, too...and I've ridden for several companies...and that still doesn't mean I don't suck.

I guess that is all true. I have actually just stepped on a board and it broke. That one I had for 2 hours. It was kind of like WTF?

sers 12-22-06 12:26 PM

i liked riding around doing ollies, pop shove-its, and acid drops over and off things more than anything. i dont think i ever landed a heelflip and i couldn't grind to save my life.

TRaffic Jammer 12-22-06 12:43 PM

Some stomp 'em, some float like butter flies. I used to land my big drops with the ball of my foot in the back. I lived to grind.

No complys, and step-pops.

As for skating hard and breaking boards. Seriously, 80's board were close to bomb proof and weighed a ton, especially the Powell XT's. I remember how some companies actually built in flex layers to keep them from breaking. Sure it was possible, but you had to try waaaaay harder than with boards today [insert old man voice].

Now, enought with the dissing. Pack to the top. Post pics...

dustinlikewhat 12-22-06 01:09 PM

I think I've been skating for something going on 21 years, and I still can't ollie, well i did learn how to, but it's not something i can use while skating. I love bombing hills, power slides, and crabwalks. flippy tricks were just never my thing.

I found out last night that my friend who lives in a warehouse is going to be building a mini ramp, I can't wait to skate it.

TRaffic Jammer 12-22-06 01:45 PM

back in the day taking your feet off the deck was an alien concept.

heebro 12-22-06 02:04 PM

Nice. I know my first was a Mountain and I believe it was the same one, though not pink. I had two of those "black and white face" Blenders, probably my favorite deck ever. Nice and wide for carving up bowls and big slappy grinds...

Except for doing sweet handplants.

seaneee 12-22-06 03:14 PM

this may sound cheesy, but when I was in jr high, like 13 or something, I had this older friend. He was 17 or so, and I remember him being really good (by my standards). I was always embarrased to skate with him 'cause I sucked. The one day some older kids were baggin' on me. He stopped them and said "it doesn't matter how good you are, as long as you're having fun". As cheesy as it was, I was sooo stoked by that, I still really try and apply it. I sucked at skating. I could ollie and grind and stuff, but wasn't super good. But I still have fun.

I loved my lance. I rember my mom was down on it 'cause I had rat bones. She thought it was bad. I had tracker ultra lights on there because she wasn't down for the iron cross on indys. I was super cool.

A couple of years ago I got to meet and interview lance. Like a dumb little school kid, the first thing I told him was about my deck. He was super stoked to hear that. In a weird way, it help him let down his guard. He's a really rad guy.

TRaffic Jammer 12-22-06 03:18 PM

^^^^Lance always did seem to be a reasonable sort...cool story^^^^
