Hopetoditchcar In the 1980s these bikes were dubbed "funny" just because they looked funny.
And there's no benefit in having the seat stays join the top tube - the theory was it made for a stiffer rear triangle - but of course it also increases aerodynamic drag (and is banned by cycling's governing body, the UCI, now anyway).

I think it's more to do with the term "funny car", which was a class of dragster long before funny bikes existed. People just took the term and applied it to bikes.
