Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? MKS Half Cages

Anyone use these? They're nice looking but maybe useless?

i don't know that i'd want to use those riding brakeless. straps are in effect your brakes....so. yea. i change my mind. i DEFINITELY wouldn't ride with those. look like they might be fun for single speed or something tho.

Bikes: yes

those look useless to me. you can put your foot in it, but i can't imagine that you can use it much, if at all.

i've seen a person or two here and there riding clips without straps. also useless.

Bikes: Trash... for serious.

i used to ride without straps and just cages around town. Pretty much worthless. and I only did this while singlespeed. But yea, it was worthless. I am sure these are stiffer, so they should be less worthless. but they still wont do much. although I guess we sould wait to make our final decision until someone actually tries a pair.

Yeah they look alright, but no wei. Probably as functional as your appendix. Would you get an appendix transplant?

my best friend bought a pair for his first conversion by accident; he meant to get the regular full cages... we decided to put them on just for the hell of it to give them a try... they are definitely not stiff, totally worthless, and i would not have gotten on his bike if he hadn't had a brake (which he did) they were such garbage, he ended up bending one within a week, just slowing to a stop. stay away for all fixed gear applications!

Useless. I have a pair of plastic ones and they are horrible. That being said my wife likes them on her bike as she finds them easy to get in and out of. For fixed, no way.

I put a pair on my girlfriend's sister's ten-speed. They're useful inasmuch as they help her keep her feet on the pedals a little better, but that's about it. Useless for fixed gear.

Bikes: Bates (of Coburg) track bike(60s/70s?), Malvern Star Ladies coronation (1953), SuperElliots pathracer (60s?), Repco pathracer (1964), Holland Ladies (50s?), Moa (50s?), Hillman Ladies (40s?), Batavia? (40s?), Malvern Star 2 star ladies (50s?)...etc.

I have 'em and they are not too great. They don't provide any supporrt for pulling up (when out of the saddle, or for stopping) and they don't fit street shoes too well. Supposedly "one size fits most", well I am only a size 9 and they don't put my foot in the right position with most footwear. That said, they are still in use on my beater as they are better than nothing at all. They do stop your foot moving forward and provide a small amount of help when slowing down.

Do NOT use them without a handbrake on a fixed gear bike.

i have them and i really like them. just enough to keep my foot positioned over the pedal but i never have to worry about bailing or out fiddling with them to get in. i do ride a single though, so i never have to worry about backpedaling.

I'd imagine they'd keep your foot in the right position, and stop you slipping off, but that would be all.

I also bought a pair by accident and installed them to see how they worked. Yeah, worst thing ever! They are not stiff and if it is wet outside your foot would slide off the side of the pedal.
