Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

You know you're a bike nerd when...

I just realized I am a hopeless bike nerd earlier when I woke up and my first thought was about a bike build I'm working on. When did you folks come to terms with your unhealthy obsession (bikes, not crack)?

When I was working at the library I would take my break to go outside and look at my bike. For 15 minutes. Sometimes I would remember to get something out of the vending machine so I wouldn't be hungry for the rest of my shift.

i was even considering keeping my road conversion for a little longer, though i think i may ditch out the front rim that i have invariably screwed up for something else... and maybe redo that headset again, and overhaul the headset on my track bike, and see if i can get the chainline 1mm more perfect, and invest all my hard earned money...

oh god.

You check out the bike instead of the girl riding it.
You argue about gear ratios and the math involved.

I lock my bike up in such a way that it is pleasing to the eye and then sit inside of the coffee shop and look at it. I am constatly working on the bigger and better bike. I go onto ebay at least 3 times a day to look at recently posted BINs to see if someone who doesn't know what they're unloading lets loose something cool.

I came to terms with all this when I realized I'm a naturally obsessive person who will find anything to avoid real life, be it bikes or any other hobby I've been into over the years. Bike interest is just a general vehicle to allow me to avoid reality and engage in an aesthetic movement.

I don't consider it until I'm in public. When pretty women walk by and my eye is looking the other way at some limited Merckx frame that just shot down the street. When people ask me how work is going and I immediately launch into a ramble about bottom brackets. When people say "I love you" and I respond back, "I love my bike."

I have the same problem. Worked fine for Uni, at least the subjects I was interested in. The ones I wasn't, I just couldn't get my head around them, no way. I passed the exam for one of those subjects purely for class atendance.

But nowadays the problem has worsened. I have tons of unfinished projects, bikes, electronics etc.

Oh, and to the OP: you know you're a cyclonerd, when you use the kitchen scale to compare the weight of a V-brake setup vs. disk brake, at the same time NOT being a weight weenie!

Well I guess that like most of us here, I have an obsessive personality, but not in the sense that I have a new bike every week. I tend to switch a set-up on one of my bikes at least once every week or two, whether that means a change in bars, ratio, or even frame (if I get a cheap one thrown my way). It doesn't help that I work at a shop and am surrounded by people who all think just like me. I'm in no way complaining because it makes me happy that it's an obsession that brings me tangible benefits from my healthy physique to my flashy status symbols (kidding, dootray).

since we are in a loving committed (if polygamous) relationship there is no reason my bike shouldnt be able to visit me in the hospital

there have been many magazine pictorials featuring bikes. Unfortunately, most are of wal-mart type bikes as well as crusiers. In one pictorial, a guy and a gal are "conversing" in a bike shop. while the bikes are crap, there is a Specialized logo prominent.

Noticing that shows I am a bike geek.

When you find a deal on sweet vintage ride for your significant other then spend years looking for a matching one for yourself.

When your mother in law moves your bike to the other side of the garage without asking and your like "SHE DID WHAT." AND then spend a good 10 minutes looking for scratches she might have put on the paint job and finding out she had dropped the bike and put a ding on the top tube on your new bike/paint job and then start crying like someone died.

(Just happened)
