need wheelset - london/europe

Hi all,

I just relocated from Boston to London and, horror of horrors, my wheels did not make it through the postal system successfully. The weather here is finally getting really nice, and it's killing me that I can't ride my bike. Does anyone know of a good local shop or internet site in the UK or even Europe where I can procure a new set of quality, but not too pricey, fixed/fixed or flip flop, bolt-on wheels? Or even hubs and rims and I'll build them up.

Thanks,
Jess

Most decent local shops should be prepared to order something in and build it for you even if they dont have a flip-flop in stock, I like cyclesurgery (www.cyclesurgery.co.uk).

I just came from Boston to London for a week. Ive been here since sat. and the weather has been amazing. I probably wont be much help but i was walking along the river (the side that the eye is on) toward tower bridge and there was a bike shop with decent prices a bit before the bridge right near to some dungeon tourist attraction

Bike shop near the London Dungeon is On Your Bike, 54 Tooley Street. https://www.onyourbike.com. Don't remember On Your Bike having much fixie stuff but they can order through UltimatePursuits/Madison.

Would recommend Brixton Cycles, worker owned co-op. They build a fair amount of fixie stuff and handily on your way to Herne Hill Velodrome (Should be open for the season soon).

For cheap online options, would have suggested DeesideCycles.com but they seem to have gone bust. You may want to look at www.sjscycles.com who have cheap hubs (+spokes), or on-one.co.uk (pretty much same hubs, so you just need to pick your 'brand').

Guy who runs kiwicycles seems like a good bloke. Helps out Witcomb Cycles (really helpful framebuilders - only one left in london it seems you don't have to know to get work done by).

Oh and Jess, make sure you go to Herne Hill for the good friday meeting on the 6th April. World class field, bike swap and good times.

You might have to dig a little bit on their site, but they have so much stuff available it's ridiculous.

Thanks for all the great responses! If I end up going the route of building up my own wheels, do any of the shops mentioned allow you to rent out the space + tools to do your own work?

If any do it's going to be Brixton Cycles, it's a workers co-op and they're a friendly bunch.

I don't think so - Brixton Cycles are really friendly, but they don't have that much workshop space and they are usually really busy. If you want to build your own you can always do it in the bike frame. Then the only tool you need is a spoke wrench.

I have also seen a guy advertising a pair of wheels (formula on Open Pros) for £115, which is way cheaper than any of the London bike shops will do. By the way, there is a an ebay shop called number1bikebits that offers a similar deal. I would advise you to steer well clear of it as the customer service is appalling.
