I'm happy w/ my GoLite Race pack, which they've unfortunately discontinued. Closest one they make now is the Jam^2 pack. Same size, but instead of a detachable lid cover and a nice outer mesh pouch on the back, there's no lid cover and a zipper pocket on the back.
3000cu.in., 1lb 9oz, so it's lighter than the Race by 3oz if you really want to be a weight weenie about it.

of the three sizes i have the mid sized chrome backpack and we live in the same town. my buddy has the smaller chrome backpack and i think he might be willing to part with it...if you're interested.

I want the bungie cord thing, but on the back of my PTE bag. That would be SOOOOOO awesome.

I interpreted it as "not those one-strap sling bags".

I could be wrong. My freight backpack is nice on and off the bike.

I have both a Reload backpack (the fullsize one) and an Ortlieb. The Reload is badass, but SO SO SO big. Almost too big. I started using the Ortlieb when I didn't have as much to carry because the Reload was so big. It can definitely come in handy, but when you don't have alot to carry it may be too much.

The Ortlieb is nice, but the lack of subdivided compartments is a little frustrating. Can't beat the price though!

The external pockets on the reload had a habit of scattering my **** to the four winds whenever they felt like it.

how do you think i got the idea, i do it too...but only when i make a quick trip to 7-11

aren't the Ortlieb ones claimed to be dry-bag waterproof?

I don't usually ride with it because it's oversize for everyday needs, but i have a deuter futura 42AC hiking/trekking pack and it works really well. I have to adjust the straps to fit when i'm riding (versus upright). Mine has aircomfort, which is basically a suspended mesh panel that keeps the solid part off your back, thereby letting enough air circulate in there. Pretty standard for newish hiking packs. Maybe one of the smaller Futura Zeros, or the alpine ascent Black Diamond ones would work nicely.

Yeah, you could sit in a river with an Ortlieb an it wouldn't get wet inside.

I used to ride with a north face bag similar to this... it worked well because it had sternum and hip straps, so it kept my load super-stable and wasn't constantly pulling on my shoulders like a "bookbag" backpack.

I ditched it once I got my Baileyworks because it is bigger and it looks cooler.

Fortunately for me and my lowly bags, I avoid the river crossings on my commute...

My only qualm is that the bag opening isn't as big around as the bag it's self, which has hindered me in packing some bigger things. Works great for the price, though.
