It cost me about £16, which is about 30 dollars. One of the cheap ones.

Got calipers or a clearly marked ruler?

I'd like to know how much taper the 75 spindle has.

I would measure the spindle flats at the thickest part, towards the center of the spindle, and then again at the thinnest part, towards the end.

I think it goes easier or more accurately with calipers than eyeballing it with a ruler, but if you only have a ruler use a ruler.

Anyway, we would hang to those numbers and then compare them to a known JIS spindle and a known ISO spindle, and see if they match either or whether they fall somewhere in between.

From the following site:

"According to Sutherland’s Handbook, ISO crank on JIS spindle should not be a problem if the crank bolt is tightened sufficiently."

I agree with the sutherland statement. Even when changing them back and forth repeatedly? Taper angle is the same so how would using ISO cranks on a Jis taper widen them more than Jis on Jis? Then only difference will be insertion depth, no?

JIS and ISO have the same taper?

How interesting.

In what dimension(s) do they differ?

They share the same taper angle, but different widths.

starting to think this whole jis /iso need its own sticky or maybe it own forum.
its everywhere and ....does anyone really know for sure what the right answer is people seem to be going back and fourth with the answers.
now I'm really confused.
all I really want to know is what BB to use with my superbe pro cranks, but I'm just selfish that way, I can't find an english superbe pro bb to save my life. other wise I would just use the bb made for the cranks like with my dura-ace and sugino 75s.

this all very interesting but confusing to my simple mind as well.

I have a campagnolo BB (italian). It fits a campagnolo crank. However, it WONT fit my sugino 75 cranks.

Since my campag BB is surely ISO, i presume sugino 75's must be japanese standardized.
I've got a Campy Centaur BB on mine now, 75's fit much deeper in the spindle on this BB than on my UN54.... my two cents. Is the Veloce the cheapest Campy?

Really? My 75 cranks only go half the way in. I'm afraid to push it in too far for fear of damaging my cranks.

(Honest question, not trying to be a dick)
because if chances are that i've already mildly deformed my cranks from using them with a jis spindle, it's my understanding that it's my best bet to just stick to that taper... someone feel free to correct me... especially since i had always anticipated using a phil bb once i had the money, and phil specifically recommends their jis 108 for the 75's.

Technically, the Sugino 75's take an ISO bb taper. If you are going with Phil bb however, they do recommend their JIS taper- apparently it fits perfectly. Not sure why, but I'm inclined to go with what Phil says given the background. As for other manufacturer's bb's, I would assume your better off sticking to ISO.

BTW- I'll be building up Pinarello road conversion w/ Sugino 75's and Phil 'JIS' taper 109mm bb once my wheelset shows up. Once it's done, I'll post on how chainline turned out.
