I just showed my 10 year old kid who hates his helmet this thread. His jaw dropped on many of these. I said "You gotta wear your helmet from now on ok?" "NO PROBLEM DAD!"

No pics since it happened so long ago. It was a boring Christmas at the cousins house, so I brought the bike along with me. I was out of the saddle going over some cobblestones when I lost the chain and lost balance. Went down HARD but was able to hobble back to the house after a few minutes. I think I rolled instead of skidded which saved me. A bit of road rash but it wasnt that bad. No helmet either, I was so lucky.

^^^you need to be carving "slayer" into your arm in those pics.
what digusts me about this thread is how many people got where they are because of getting hit from behind by drivers who drove off. more disgusting when you think about that fat jackoff in canada who'd say it's their fault. and all the fat jackoffs we have here who'd agree.

i was cutting spring steel for a machine and it sunk soo deep into my thumb for that picture. you ever feel down and cant really snap out of it and then you lose a little blood and the endorphins start flowing and everything gets better? falling sometimes is the best antidepressant ever.

I woke up with minutes to get to class one time, jumped on my bike immediately (still asleep Im assuming), out the door, started gaining speed down hill then went to slow down for some pedestrians, stopped pedaling for a moment (had been riding a geared bike for a few days) and launched myself over the handlebars. It gets better though because I was clipped in. The whole apparatus became airborn, back tire waaaaay in the air, came down and slid out onto my right side. Slid pretty far on my right ass cheek right in front of the pedestrians. I immediately jumped up acted as if I was fine and continued hurrying to class, where I arrived blood dripping from my hand and a strange ***** spot developing on my pants right on the bottom of the cheek I slid on. Turned out I had a huge friction burn which is still slightly red about 5 months later. It also pussed for a whole week, I had to wear dark jeans so it wouldnt show. I showed some people and they called me baboon ass.
Not the worst crash Ive had but definately the dumbest, and only one I can attribute to riding fixed.

a few times while working i've hit pedestrians who step out into traffic without looking. worst one was when i was going down boyolston to downtown with the flow of traffic. about 50 yards away, i begin to slow down since the light turned (but still had some momentum) and this elderly asian lady stepped out from behind a large box truck into my path. not enough time to brake or anything, i plow into her and we both go flying. fortunately we we're both ok, though an ambulance did take her to the hospital. i got out of it with just a few cuts and bruises.

Hope this isn't too much thread necromancy, but I thought I'd post my good news.
I went to the doctor Friday, and... I'm fully recovered! Back brace is off for good. I'm going to take 2-3 weeks to build up my core muscle strength before I get back on a bike, but it'll happen.
The only long term issue is... I'm about 5mm shorter. Seriously. The compression fracture in my spine made one of my lumbar vertebra about a half a centimeter shorter. Weird.

Two years ago, drafting a fellow cyclist on my team down a long, gradual hill. We had to make a sweeper right-hand turn, and so my teammate used the whole lane. Just as we near the double-yellow (no plans to cross it, i promise), my teammate brakes and swerves right, because there was a woman coming the other direction RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE of the road.
His braking put his rear wheel just behind my front wheel, and the quick right turn caught my wheel and sent me over the bars. Worst part of the situation: we hadn't passed the woman's car yet, so I slid right in front of her still-moving vehicle. (It's amazing how much goes through your head in a fall, even one you're not expecting. I knew instantly that I'd better roll or else be hit by the car.)
Resulting damage: bent frame, deep cuts on left shoulder, left elbow, and right knee. Road rash through spandex around my hip. Best part: The 13 miles to get back to where we came from, after 50 already on the bike. REAL best part: the blood that poured out of my shorts because of that little stretchy part at the bottom of the leg.

I raced velodrome growing up and one time my shoe lace came undone at the height of a sprint, both ends caught the crank and began to very rapidly pull the shoe very tightly, I veered up towards the wall as quick as I could (making someone else nearly wreck as I was in the lead on the inside line) but by the time I got to the top the damage was done. Apparently my bones were weaker than the laces. I lost my grip on the wall then slid down the track on my side while still tied to the bike. It took a bit of cutting but they finally got the shoe off. Of all the bones I've broken that was the most immedietly painful incident.
