Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Covering unused canti and shifter bosses ?

Hi

(First of all the customary apology if the subject has been previously explored and now fails to arouse you sexually )

I should finally get my Cross Check frame from the post today - I am going to be running a single Magura HS33 front brake (yeah, a flat bar, sort of...) and wondered what people are using to cover canti and shifter bosses that are not in use? Those funny little plastic or cardboard things they come wrapped in? For downtube IŽd think dummy shifter "bases" would be ideal?

If I am going to run gears on that rig on a later date IŽd hate the bosses to go rusty, as they seem to do on most conversions?

Bikes: 2011 SE Old Man Flyer.

These are .45, I have them shimmed with a bit of electricians tape but .38 is almost perfect.

I can't help either, but just wanted to say that my fiancee is Finnish, she rides a fixed gear, she has a house in Lapland and we are getting married there next summer. F*ck yeah.

i use a rear brake to cover mine

but if you're worried about rust, you could just screw some allen bolts into the threads.

To avoid rust, I'd grease the posts and the threads. Only that would attract dirt. Oh well.
Perhaps use duct tape to match the frame colour, perhaps leave a bolt in.

Bikes: IRO Mark V, Karate Monkey half fat, Trek 620 IGH, Cannondale 26/24 MTB, Amp Research B3, and more.

I took the rear posts out of my MTB. Left that big hole. Went to horrible big box home improvement store and found some plastic press-in plugs that fit perfectly and look like they were purpose built for it.

cable stops do a good job of covering the shifter posts... that is what they are for after all.

If you're using a distinctive color of handlebar tape, wrap the bosses in it too with some shellac on. Or hollow out some wine bottle corks.
