How much did you spend (minus donor frame) to covert to a fixed gear and what did you spend it on?

Rear track wheel....bought hub and stole a rim from a 700c front whl I had laying around and laced it up myself.....

Funny thing is you can buy a new rear wheel and cog/ring for only slightly more than what it cost to build wheel yourself

i went the more spendy route, but got good deals on most things

new front/back wheels (mavic open pro + miche primato track hubs), built up especially for my frame, new bottom bracket, crankset and wheel installation for a perfect chainline, all done at the bike shop by a pro for a little over $300.

handlebars, and a bunch of other small things, about $100

pretty spendy, but i ended up with lots of awesome killer parts, and a solid, reliable ride.

$220 including $75 for a frame with usable headset, BB and cranks. That is low due to intershop connections. Hand lugged Trek frame, Phil Wood BB, Shimano 600 cranks, Campy headset, XTR front hub, 14/17 spokes, Araya rim, Shimano/Look pedals, Dura/Ace freewheel hub, *14/15 spokes, *Mavic Reflex rim, cinelli stem and track bar, *Surly cog, Diacompe levers, ? caliper, Dura/Ace post, *Conti Giro tubulars. New parts are astericked.

This is the second generation of this bike. My first setup was alot cheaper. Then I found out I loved fixed and upgraded.

Bike has a OPC so chainline was perfect. Converting old ten speeds is so easy.

If you don't want anything fancy don't spend that much on the bike

the first time i converted a road bike

i got a bianchi with campy cranks normandy hubs to mavic rims with continental tires for $50 bucks (best deal i've ever gotten, note to everybody: buy bikes on rainy days, better yet in the middle of rainy season)

the second conversion i did was the best ever. i found a track hub at the LBS, but the hub was stripped out from somebody putting the wrong tread lockring on, they threw it out, i took the cog, and the tracknuts, and put them in my parts bin.

one day i found a 27" mallard/rigida rear wheel in the dumpster at a fancy bike shop... put the old cog on, and a bottom bracket lockring ($3) bought a tube and tire ($15) then put the wheel on an old motobecane that fixie cost me less than $20, and most of that was the tube and the tire. i also switched out the bars for some chromed out steel bars i stole from a trashed bianchi in my backyard.

then again i did spend a grand on my real trackbike, but thats besides the point.
