Well yeah..they are the best if mostly what you want to do on the bike is pedal. If you want to screw around doing tricks, playing polo or whatever they are suboptimal for sure. But I still think they are better than straps for any application.

Straps and cages are the spawn of satan. Clipless is the only way to go....rock on.

THen i changed cleats to a black set. THey are now silver (after the black paint comes off) and last week i unclipped while skipping down a hill. Just sayin, you always gotta be prepared for an inadvertant release. I'm sure i did something wrong in my skip but I'm just as sure that there isn't a real difference between black and silver spd cleats, unless it's just about how new the cleat is.

My Shimano M520 service manual in my mitts here says the SH51 (black) cleats are the ones with only one direction of release, and the SH56 (gold) cleats are an optional accessory with multiple directions. "If the cleats release by accident, you may fall off the bicycle and serious injury may result".

If your cleats say SH51 you're good. Not to be flippant but if they are releasing while you skip your release may be too loose or you may be turning your feet.

I've ridden both and clipless wins out in every way. I always found that I couldn't get the perfect tension on my clips and straps. They were always either too loose to be efficient or too tight and I couldn't get my foot out quick enough in a jam. I find skidding, sprinting and hopping off and on the bike so much easier with a clipless system. FYI I ride Eggbeaters and Shimano MA80 MTB shoes.

I rode both and like both for different reasons. A lot of times it really depends on my mood and destination.

Yeah I'm chalking my unclippings up to rider error. My cleats were different colors, same shape and different brands (the silvers were wellgo and the blacks were shimano). I dont worry about unclipping too much, it's happened thrice. It's scary for a second and then i'm happy that i have the brake. My only point is that the color of the spd cleat isn't necessarily what you should be looking at to determine the appropriate one.

Yes it is. Your silver was an spd knockoff not an spd cleat.

They do. On the package. In a few different places. Including the diagram on the back that shows you how to unclip.

Nothing says "hello" like a lycra covered flab hitting a tile floor after your Look road cleats send you flying into the air...

(I like Sidi mountain shoes and eggbeater cleats....)

i gotta disagree with dutret about the time aliums... maybe you just got a bad pair? i have as set on one of my bikes and another set of the atac carbons on my "nice" bike.

i can't tell the difference in release between them. and both work ever so slightly beter than the spd's i use to commute on my other two rigs.

also, my girlfriend will only use atacs now after feeling how much easier they are to get in and out of then her old spd's.

spd's definitely win the durability war though, especially the cleats.

sweet. i was pretty much of the mindset that i wouldn't even bother with straps (plus, i can't really fit into women's jeans, so i would only look 1/2 dressed up!), thanks for shoring this up for me. by the way, ALL of your clipless problems would be solved if you just bought the older Ritchey Logic 2's. they rule, and you can pick 'em up on EBay for like $5. that's right... they rule

Shimano MTB shoes and second-hand icon pedals get the job done. Great power transfer when riding/skidding, not to bad to walk around with.

Clipless is a nobrainer for bikes that I take on longer rides, but my hack bike keeps the good 'ol bmx platforms.

I started with Shimano MTB shoes, but the lace up ones with an actual sole that look like normal shoes, save for a strap of velcro. They work perfectly for walking around school and work (especially at the bike shop), but walking more than a mile gets tough because the sole is stiff.

I started on Time Atacs, and if you don't mind the look, I really recommend them. Solid, easy pedals. I now have Eggbeaters for the weight/aesthetic benefits, and aside from these, they are worse in every regard. Okay, maybe better bearings, but I dunno.

I'm thinking of going clipless on my conversion. Can anyone recommend a not too expensive, double sided pedal? How effortless is clipping out (2 years of riding fixed, and I have yet to master trackstanding)?

I enjoy the wholesome track goodness of Speedplay Zero Track pedals on my track bike.
For my other bikes, Time ATACs.

Clipless all the way. I remember the collective sigh of relief in the mid-to-late eighties when Look came out with thier pedals and we could all finally escape from the deathtraps that were toe clips and straps with cleated cycling shoes (Sean Kelly, of course, would wait an additional five or so years, and even then begrudgingly so).

Thankfully, there is a whole range of styles of clipless pedals to choose from nowadays, and I use the same clipless pedals on in SS that I use on my CX bike.

+1 on the speedplays. I won't use anything else. But, as posted, you better have a REALLY high ride/walk ratio .
