Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

stupid post but ...coasting ?

do you find it really weird/hard after riding fixed?

I just got on my 24 bmx and I haven't been on anything but fixed for a year and it was frickin' hard!
stopping ! oh yea you need brakes!
don't forget to stop pedaling through corners 180 cranks like to pedal strike around corners.

didn't think it would be a hard transition.

Yes, I do. It feels so unnatural to stop pedaling while moving.

Me, too. The first time, my legs stopped every time they passed the top/bottom of the rotation. It was good, though, because now I actually think about my spin while riding fixed and I've improved my spin a lot on both.

I can't count the number of times I have tried to brake the roadie by backpedaling after not having ridden it in a while. I always panic for a second because I forget I have handbrakes available.

I just coasted about 50 blocks. It was awesome. The beer helped.

I kind of instinctively remember how to stop each of my bikes although my tall bike was broken for a couple of months and something like that happened. When I finally rode it again I tried to stop with the pedals (****, freewheel), the reached for brake levers (oh yeah, no hand brakes either) and finally stopped with my foot. It was scary for a second or two.
