stupid dropout spacing question

sorry for the silly question, but hopefully someone can set me straight right away. i've got an old road frame that i'm thinking about converting over to a single speed first, and eventually to a fixie. but to save time/money up front, i'm thinking about just using a cheap-o rear wheel with a freehub/cassette. but then i saw some cheap flip/flop wheels and now i'm considering picking those up. but will they fit? is the spacing on the hub/axle the same for track and road frames/wheels? thanks in advance.

Bikes: Dean TI fixie... Viner ProComp... NEXT pink sparkely!

sometimes they're the same, most of the time they're not. you need to measure the frame spacing and then measure the hubs...
