I know this is a bike forum, but I particulary love trying to "walk" any new city to get a real feel for it, and Boston is absolutely fantastic for that.
Here's one idea that would take you about a day, depending on how much you hang out.
Start in Davis Sq. in Somerville. It's a nice little low-key neighborhood where you can grab some coffee and breakfast, maybe hit up the used book store. Start down Mass Ave from Davis Sq. You'll next hit Porter Sq. Not too much going on but if you want to grab some quick Japanese hit up the basement of the mall on the left side of Mass Ave. There's a cheap Japanese food court down there. You'll also pass by various boutiques, ATA cycle (not too much experience there), and bars. Keep going down Mass Ave and you'll end up in Harvard Sq. Just walk around... it's lost character but still plenty to see. Keep going down Mass Ave. and you'll go through Central Sq. (Mid East, plenty of restaraunts and stores around) then end up in the Mit area of Cambridge. I'll second the MIT museum. They had a "kinetic art" exhibit when I went last that made me absolutely giddy. Cross the bridge and keep going until you hit Newbury St. Other Side Cosmic Cafe will be on your right (opposite side of Newbury St). Grab a nice beer. Go back across and walk down Newbury St. You'll then hit the public gardens. Ah... relaxation. Very nice in the spring. Go straight through the gardens, cross the st, and you'll be in the Boston Commons. Walk straight through the commons. At the other side of the commons, pick up the Freedom Trail. You'll see it 'cuz it's a red stripe that goes along the sidewalk. You'll follow it through some historic sites, go through government center, head towards Quincy Market (tourist land), maybe grab some fruit from the public market: Haymarket, then end up in the North End. That's my hood, is quite historic (I live 50 ft as the crow from the oldest public sq in the US, Paul Revere, Old North Church), and is the Italian ethnic neighborhood. It makes Little Italy in NY look like a joke. Grab some dinner here. I'm not Vegan, but I figure pasta might be workable?

o yeah! one more thing i can think of. if ya go to harris cyclery in newton (and ya really should--just to breathe the same air as sheldon brown), there's a huge independent bookstore also in newton called the new england mobile bookfair. eccentric as all get out but they have everything--current books and a great bargain book selection. the bargain area alone is as big as most chain stores. there's a bike shop across the street from it as well.
but duder! go to harris.

Well I came back on Tuesday to LAX and was surprised to have HEAT. Boston had some nice chilly weather but a little to cold for me.
I am a wuss when it comes to cold weather. On Friday (5/4/07) we were walking around Harvard and we see a bunch of students in shorts and flip flops...I mean damn to you guys it must be heaven even though it’s still chilly.
I loved the museums and architecture and picturesque towns and shops. I’m from palm trees vast land, beaches and condos. Boston has culture, art and TONS OF BIKES!!!
It was so awesome seeing so many bikes around town. It made me miss my bike
I love how you can walk or bike anywhere and you don’t need a car….that’s so awesome!!!
I had a great time tasting some yummy vegan food and Buddha’s delight and Veggi planet were awesome!!!
I love Boston and am glad to have had such a great visit and opportunity to visit your cities and towns.
I have tons of pictures but I haven’t downloaded them yet so when I do I will post them on this or on a flicker.com site.
I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU BOSTONIANS for your recommendations, help, and offering to let me use your bikes.
Thanks and if any of you Bostonians find your way to San Diego, CA email me and you can have a place to crash or you can borrow a bike and we can go bike riding.Cheers and thanks Boston I loved my first trip to the East coast.

i only put sugar in crappy store bought coffee, when I make it myself it's black. I think 5 or 6 go to BU, at least that's what I gather from bostonfixed.com, where a lot of the boston folks have moved to.
I'm one of those 5 or 6
