if you want a perfect cadence, then fixed gears are precisely the worst thing to ride. to have a perfect cadence, you want a geared road bike with a super closely spaced rear cassette (corn-cob)

perfect spin /=/ perfect cadence

If you want "me-to-bike", go clipless !

+1

clipless ftw for the best pedal/foot connection. clips are almost as good, but you have to use stiffsoled cycling shoes and cinch the straps down tight so it's hard to get out of to get any real benefit from clips...then you are 95% of the way to clipless anyhow..so..

That's true but irrelevant to the point that the poster was making. it's easy to see what he meant even though he used the wrong word.

Retem 04-16-07 07:14 PM

ride rollers fixed thats the only way to perfect cadence in my book

yeah in my mind i thought spin and cadence were the same...?

thanks for saying what was already going through my mind though.

probably true..but whats the innernets without someone nitpicking on semantics and terminology? :p ;)

i was pointing out that spin and cadence are not interchangable. but yea...

mander 04-16-07 07:19 PM

Cadence=rotations per minute

Spin=efficient rotation of the cranks, particularly at high cadences

yup.. that was my point that i hope i made.

andre nickatina 04-16-07 07:26 PM

hmm yes, spin was exactly the word i was looking for than.

i don't really want to deal with the negatives of clipless, e.g. having to bring two sets of shoes to work, paying for them, worrying about getting out of them in sketchy situations. i think cost is the biggest factor but yeah. i'd love to ride some for the me-to-bike feel but for anything other than pleasure rides or going to the track, i don't think they'd be ideal.

i also wonder if the guy that broke through the powergrips is one of the burly types who would normally break through a standard leather strap as well.

Retem 04-16-07 07:26 PM

ok shut up and go ride your bikes I have an excuse for being here I am at work

Get mountain bike clipless shoes, then. You can walk in them comfortably.

andre nickatina 04-16-07 07:30 PM

can i get the shoes and clips for $100 or less?

jamey 04-16-07 07:36 PM

powergrips have been around a lot longer than i thought. one bad experience and they seem sketchy? no way, powergrips feel a thousand times more secure than a single strap ever has...doubles feel pretty nice though.

yes there are almost always package deals with a shimano shoe and an spd pedal for less than 100
althoug I would go with sidis and atacs outright

yes.. check nashbar/performance/jensonusa and the other online bike shops..

they usually have a shoe/eggbeater deal for around 100, or if you wait for a sale/coupon you can get this cheaper or even a different combo cheaper...it pays to look around.

eh i rode with powergrips when i first went fixed and ripped the strap out of the bracket trying to learn skids, i have never had anything remotely close to this happen with clips and straps. Personally, I'm never going to use them again

dustinlikewhat 04-16-07 07:44 PM

woah power grips used to be the most hated things on this board, what happened?

yeah, they're like 20 years old. so you've ridden both eh? i think i may just spring for the power grips because the price is right and the consensus among reviewers is that they beat single straps any day. hopefully they're good enough for breakless riding, if not i'll be ted shredding to the LBS for some double straps or sale bin clipless pedals i guess.

do you tighten your straps every time on and off the bike? if you do, there is no way power grips could be more secure than single straps.

are you a burly / muscular / heavy guy?

andrewssohip 04-16-07 07:49 PM

oh also, andre nickitina, i am pretty far from burly, lanky may be a better adjective. I ride nylon single straps with mks clips and have never come close to ripping one. I just don't trust the attachment method for the power grips :/

edit: i am 6' 155lbs or so

don't get eggbeaters two guys I know have broken them in two, three guys I know have come unclipped at inopportune times (yes they had brand new cleats less than a week old) the eggbeater haven't lasted anyone I know more than a year
