Sunglasses that don't suck

So when I'm riding in the morning and it's breezy and cold, my eyes tear up like crazy, to the point where I can barely see.

I've tried normal sunglasses (aviator type, and yes, I'm trying to be a hipster and fit in, I've also co-opted the aviation culture). They don't work, the air just sorta gets in there.

So my question is, do any of you wear sunglass that work but don't look super roadie lame?

barba 04-20-07 04:57 PM

It may not be what you want to hear, but the roadie ones work great. Being able to change lenses for the conditions is nice as well. Basically you want something that fits tight and wraps around to keep the wind out. They should, rather obviously, be shatter proof.

I have these really obnoxious girl sunglasses that can be bought at the pharmacy for like 4 dollars. Work great...

:)

I love these shades. They have the mono-lens and the side shields for added awesomeness. no more tearshttp://farm1.static.flickr.com/195/4...a68638e8a2.jpg

nobrainer440 04-20-07 05:09 PM

Yeah, I wear roadie glasses. Never could pull off the aviator look anyhow.

Even more lame, I usually use the pink lenses, as they work awesome in both dim and bright settings.

lima_bean 04-20-07 05:09 PM

I picked up some roadie ones from the LBS, and they work awesomely. Also dont think they are that bad looking.

Kilgore_Trout 04-20-07 05:19 PM

just today i was thinking maybe i should get some sunglasses and look more like a roadie

but in all seriousness, i would like good sunglasses.

native when wearing contacts...
must.get.lasik.

No more tears...was that an Ozzy Osbourne reference in Seaneee's thread? I think I need to go put that song on my record player.

I'm using the specialized shiftys. Despite being the ugliest thing I've ever put on my face (jokes commence ad nauseum), the self tinting lenses and lack of fogging make them my favorite glasses ever. Ever. EVER.
They are seriously ugly, but work sooo well.

They are much uglier than this in person.

i got lasik 2 years ago. i ******** love it! i can see great now and the procedure itself wasn't a big deal.

Get a pair of Smiths.

I have the District IIs:

Change lenses, doesn't block peripherals all that much, and they look good. Bunch of different colors. They retail around $120, so don't lose them. If they break, Smith offers a real generous warranty. They only downside is they're French.

Kilgore_Trout 04-20-07 06:12 PM

i got it at strong medical center in rochester, ny. i flew up there from nyc. total (lasik + plane + whatever else) came to less than it would have been in nyc and it did me really well.

roadfix 04-20-07 06:15 PM

I wear Home Depot safety glasses.

If you really wanted to coopt aviation culture, you'd rock these.

What's wrong with roadies?

I rock a pair that once belonged to Amelia Earhart that she once used in her Lockheed L-10E Electra, yo. That last sentence isn't entirely true. Some of the aviator styles by Vuarnet are pretty effective.

metallo pesante 04-20-07 07:51 PM

i either rock the oakley gascans

Some Bolle's I picked up at Goodwill.

I usually wear some $4 clear safety glasses or some yellow tinted safety glasses. I've got a hand me down pair of Serfas glasses with the interchangeable lenses, but find my cheap ones to be much more comfortable and I'm not so fearful of breaking them.

You could always go for some total wind protection:

Shiznaz 04-20-07 09:16 PM

I wear cheap wrap around shades from mountain equipment co-op. I pretty much never ride without them. If its not bright I use clear lenses and if its bright I use various tinted lenses. I figure it will keep something from hitting me in the eye and they are 100% UV protectant even when clear. The lenses cost 6 bucks so I don't even bother using a glasses case and just hook them on something or throw them in my bag. a feature you tend to lose with expensive sunglasses!

doofo 04-20-07 09:17 PM

i buy expensive sunglasses on clearance and then treat them like crap

funny how that works
