Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Fixed in Asia

Where can one purchase a fixed gear bike in Taiwan, or HK?

I'm dying here without my ride.

Check here in HK
https://www.flyingball.com/

but it's pretty ridiculous to roll in the city in hk. traffic/drivers worse than nyc and more hills than sf. would love to see someone bomb down the peak tho.

i dont know, but I bet you could get a killer deal on a bootleg fuji track or something similar!

If you're in HK just ask around at those streetside markets with all the luis vutton and pirated DVD's
(those are still there, right?)

Taiwan probably has something similar to those crazy markets....

dont forget to haggle! Haggling is a national sport over there.

actually, jokes aside, you should probably haggle at the bike shop.

Bikes: Rush Hour

I was in Asia for 5 months.. I saw remarkably few fixed gears. 1 in Singapore, where I stayed about 80% of the time. A few on display in Taipei, at a cycling trade show. I think that's it.

I was thinking Asia would be bike-heaven. Either it isn't, or I didn't look hard enough. Nearly all the serious looking cyclists I saw in Singapore were white guys... presumably expats.

i think the funny part was about buying a 'bootleg fuji track' in taiwan...

anyway, your best bet (aside from visiting the maxway factory) is probably taking a field trip to japan..
otherwise you'll have to work out a conversion on a flying turd or something..

I passed the bike along to a friend more suited to a 60cm frame. He is in love now. How are things?

You know something like 80% of the world's bikes are made in TW but no one seems to use them there -all on those mopeds. I went to visit my in-laws and every day in the taxis/cars/buses I wish I had my bike and could zoom past all the traffic. Road surface looked pretty extreme though. You would probably have more luck in TW, I had a hongkongese friend that spent ages trying to fg stuff in HK and just gave up. Strange cause they all seem to lap up any morsel of Japanese sub-culture they can get their hands on, but the track bike thing has passed them by.

You been to the velodrome in HK Lymb? Its wicked and they are building a new one...

I'll see if any of my bike friends are in HK this summer I think most are on the mainland though. And they don't let you ride in much of HK which is kinda lame.
