$800 for tools and supplies

How would you guys spend about $800 that wasn't yours, exactly? We need to lose some bike co-op money before the end of the semester, or it goes away for good. Thinking stuff like some toolkits, stands, what else?

Pay me a $500 consulting fee and I'll tell you what tools to spend the remaining $300 on.

Tap & die sets for metric and imperial. They are cheap and extremely useful.

Half of a Phil Wood spoke cutting machine or a Hozan spoke tool and a crap load of dies for it. Or, portable stands and a portable tool set and take the co-op on the road (or events) and fix bikes.

what shop tools don't you have?
i'd like a bb facing tool, headset cup press, frame/fork alignment gauge, truing stand and tools, torque wrenchs, hanger alignment gauge, campy 10sp chain tool, ultimate digital scale...santa are you listening?
thats assuming you have a couple sets of the basics like good hexes, cone/pedal wrenchs, bb tools, etc etc.

Usually co-ops don't lack $10 bikes. We have a $hitload of them.

three decent stands.
enough tools for several people to be working at onc - the ones you'll need most often. 14 and 15mm wrenches, lots of allen keys - good ones, not multitools. maybe even ratcheting dealies. truing stand. maybe a tool kit to have one of the things that are used less frequently. i think you'll have money left over.

chances are, no matter how clever cynikal intended his answer to be, you won't be cutting your own spokes for a repair coop.

save some money, because you'll lose some stuff, and you'll need to replace it.

oh, and buy tubes, degreaser, grease, lube, cables, housing, and grips/tape in bulk.

First of all, replace/buy QUALITY tools. e.g park/pedros/etc. Just the basics that are used most- cone wrenches, pedal wrenches, cable cutters, 3rd hand tool, chain tools, etc. And buy lots of quality allen wrench sets- T handled set(s) and loose keys. A couple of metric box end wrench sets are always super useful. LOTS of patch kits- or see if you can buy a ****load of patches and glue in bulk. Lots of different freewheel removers are also super useful.

Isn't there a Campagnolo tool set?
Probably too nice for a co-op

^In the year we've been up and running, we have never needed a Campy specific tool.

For awhile, we had an epidemic with losing 15mm wrenches. Same with tri-allen keys.

I think that going to the Sheldon Brown site would give you lists of tools. Then to Nashbar and see what kits they have and then stands to work on. You may even have enough for a wheel trueing stand.

Sounds like a nice problem to have.

No no. The Campy boxed tool set is mostly frame prep and alignment tools, taps, etc. (you did mean specific to Campagnolo)?

Web search yielded this:
CAMAPGNOLO TOOL CASE: There are two of these cases manufactured by Campagnolo, the full and reduced sets. The full set has all the tools necessary for cutting all machined surfaces on the entire bicycle frame as well as the tools necesary to install all of the bearing parts during final assembly of the frame. The reduced set only has the necessary tools to cut the bearing surfaces and press fits, bottom bracket threads, and seating surfaces on the frame; it doesn't include steerer dies. There is also an oversized headset kit available from Campagnolo. All Campagnolo framebuilders' tools are also available with carbide cutters at an extra cost. Contact United Bicycle Supply for prices and availability.

cable, housing, bearings, grips and bar tape in bulk are always good to have on hand.

For tools, I'm assuming you already have the basics, so which tools are you always having to pass back and forth between 2 or three users? Any tools that are in high demand get doubles.

If you have lots of bike tools, you could get some basic shop equipment.

Things that come in handy are work benches, a vice or two, an angle grinder, an air compressor and an assortment of air tools/fittings and a parts cleaner.

Stuff for organizing your current tools/parts like peg board, hooks, tool boxes, cabinets, shelves and parts bins.

Bike racks.
