I hate to say it but there is a special day for this???
I understand this is the one wekk out of the year where everyone decides to ride there bikes to work and it is just sad because they should be doing anyway whether or not its a special day or if its pooring rain out side just ride people
I remember the bike commute day a year or so ago when cruz bustamonte had his wife drive him form elk grove to freeport blvd. so he could ride to the capitol to go to work they had a news crew following him boy that was funny he was breathing hard and about to faint after about 6miles and it makes you think are people really that bad off?
rambling...off...

Bike to Work Day is really about supporting your local bike advocacy organizations. Without them there would be no new bike lanes or traffic calmed streets. These are the things that make your commute easier (the free coffee once a year is nice, but that's not what it is about).
The media usually mentions it as well. Hopefully they don't start another anti-bike campaign, as there was another smashed window incident at the Berkeley Critical Mass last night.

yeah I am just being the cynical sacramento bike advocate type guy. I completely understand the purpose of bike commute month/week I am just saying that the people that only commute via bike because its a special month/day/week are kinda lame when we live in california with our beautiful weather and scenery. the horribly sad thing is in sacramento we have 500 miles of beautiful wild bike trail that simply can't be beat.
but we still have people driving their big suvs 6 blocks to the bike trail to ride their bikes when they live along a route or a place with a marked lane.
as far as traffic calming and bike lanes go I cn ony speak for my adopted city and drivers seldom obey markings bike lanes divides medians they simly don't care and don't mind the law.
I do appreciate the efforts that cities like berkeley and davis have made they are both very well thought out as far as population dense developement goes sf and sacramento still have a long way to go to accomplish these things granted drivers are infinitly more aware in sf than in sacramento but oh well its flat here.

There's a great thread called advocacy & safety.
Keep your free stuff. Posting this here is a bit like preaching to the choir.

The SFBC will also be handing out free bike maps of the city. They show all the bike lanes, bike paths, street grades, and bike shop locations. Kind of nice to have. If anyone wants to download the BTWD Poster for their workplace, here's the link:https://www.sfbike.org/download/rides...BTWDposter.pdf

I agree that Sac has a ways to go to be a bike friendly town but we are all working very hard to make that happen. Things have changed quite a bit in the past 10 years (since I've been back in sac) and I'm sure the next 10 will be even better.
Kid728 nailed it. This is another day to remind you to support your local advocacy group or groups.

Well, City Planners (myself included) want very much to reduce the number of all autos, especially in the downtown areas. It's usually the business people who complain about the loss of parking. Parking guys love it because the supply goes down and prices go up. The market (gas and others) will cause the shift away from 2.5 ton vehicles soon enough. Enough with the hijack. Commence discussion with Bike to Work Day.
BTW, I'm working the booth for the Bike Kitchen on the 17th at Capitol Park if anyone is in Sac. Come by and say hi.

They just added another Energizer Station downtown at Rainbow Grocery (Division/13th St. @ Folsom) from 5-7PM. Just a month or so ago, Rainbow started offering a 10% discount on groceries to those who shop by bike.
Also this week's SF Bay Guardian has a front page article about Bike to Work Day and the status of the lawsuit against the city's Bike Plan. The good news is there are over 60 bike projects that could be implemented at a rapid speed once it's over. That's if the politician's don't withdraw their support. It's kind of our job to keep the pressure on them.

Points:
-Every day is like bike-to-work-day.
-7:30AM? Are you kidding me? I guess that leaves-out a huge chunk of commuters who catch the 6:59AM and 7:14AM trains to the South Bay.
