Albuquerque Veloport
(I posted this in the track forum but there doesn't seem to be too many people hanging around in there.)
Does anyone have any info on the "veloport" theyre building in Albuquerque? When it will be open and if it will be open to the public? I heard theyre building a 250m indoor track. I cruised past there this afternoon and all they have up is the bmx terrain and the entrance gate. Any info would be appreciated.

"The velodrome portion of the project could be under construction by late 2007 or 2008, though it has yet to be designed, said Richard Sertich, associate director of the city Planning Department. The cost of the velodrome phase hasn't been determined, he said."

part of the veloport is open, the bmx track has already hosted a few events but it doesnt seem like there are any free open days yet...the velodrome is going in next door, but is a bit of a fiasco. the city acquired the wooden velodrome a few years back, but didnt have anywhere to put it. now they have somewhere to put it, but budget constraints are slowing the process of building the facility to house the track. word on the street is that the velo. will be at least started this year....and there better be some open hours...

....and the word is also that this fiasco has been going on so long that much of the wood has been ruined as it had been stored outdoors.
There is a (renewed) interest in building an outdoor track and starting up some keirin racing- and no, I'm not kidding, it's closer to reality than you might think.

we are to busy spending millions to run a train between bernallion and belen a 30 mile stretch to spend it on a velodrome. besides I think they want to spend some more millions on another park for bums and crackheads downtown first. because the millions they spent on the bus, train, and grey hound staitons wasn't enough!
so I think some private fund raising might have to happen before that thing gets built.
maybe they will film a movie that need a velodrome here then it will be built in a weeek and they can use it for free.....well at least TAX free.
sorry about the rant but this city as much as i love it and call it home has some f-ed up politics and ways they spen there money.
