Man I love my Fixed gear, I love lugged steel too, but that doesn't mean I can't love my Aluminum framed, sloping top tubed, carbon forked Fuji Cross. That thing is a blast to ride long and hard, it's comfortable, and even with heavy wheels and 9 speed drivetrain, it feels a couple pounds lighter than my fixed gear. Of course if I cared I could drop a pound off the fixie just by swapping the saddle.
It's not only OK to love modern gear bikes it's the right thing to do. If modern technology makes them easier or more fun to ride what's wrong with that. You don't have to denegrate what's come before to appreciate the here and now. I've got no great affection for the aesthetic qualities of modern Alu frames, but when I look at mine my heart goes all squishy. I've built that thing slowly over the past couple of years starting with something entirely different, and put in so many miles on it. I've bonded with it and I truly love it. Let's hope you have similar warm feelings for all your bikes.

She needs a new saddle...
I feel weird or guilty when I ride this bike, but it cost less than my fixie, actually. I hate the feel of coasting but really downhills are just ridiculous on a fixie.

hahahaha, the secret little 'geared' confessions are finally coming out, I will also admit to a pure Italian road beauty, Italian steel and Campagnolo Chorus (ooooh there's a tingle in my pants). Go for it, geared roadies are a refreshing change, think of all the posts you'll generate on this forum when you pass a fixed gear rider and they have to whinge about it.

I had my MTB up for sale. Deore XT/XTR, Avid 7, sweet components.
I decided that I'm going to get that orange Nashbar double butted Reynolds 853 air hardened MTB frame and just switch the parts.
Putting on some Conti Town and Country tires and a road cassette.
Darn it... gotta change my user name now

Side note: can you even image having a ss version of one of those things? You could build it up to weigh next to nothing ... *siiigh*
