someone told me they are, but i have a hard time believing it. anyone use these for their singlespeed and find out?

bmx COGS are splined
bmx DRIVERS are held on by clips/cone nuts

If you ride a bmx freewheel hard, it's going to be the biggest biatch to get off.

There are BMX cogs without removal splines. They can only be removed by destruction or grinding a notch to bang with a punch.

the splined shimano dx bmx cogs will go right on a freehub, add spacers and your SS

freewheel cogs thread on, to remove put tool in vice, put wheel on tool, twist.........they can be stubborn

i use bmx cogs on my shimano freehub.....yes,they are splined.

i'm adding one to my mtb and i know it's a good number of teeth, so i'm not worried, but for future projects...a friend of mine put one on and said he couldn't get it off, but i don't know if that's more user error than anything else. it definitely wasn't splined, just threaded, and he was trying to use a freewheel removal tool on it.


i guess i can find out by testing it on my mtb.

he probably tried to use the tool with a wrench, you have to put the tool in a vice and then use the rim to torque on to get it loose.........it threads on and just pedaling makes it tighter, they dont come off easily

typical freewheel remover looks like a socket with teeth, but it wont fit the freewheel tight enough to really torque on it hard without it slipping off if you use a wrench on it

other option if you must use a wrench is put the tool on then thread a nut and washer on to hold the freehwheel tool in place, then torque on it.........use a breaker bar or cheater pipe and a strong friend to hold the wheel

im not lying when I say they dont come off easily, impossible no, but it takes some torque for sure, Ive removed one before, I used the vice method after getting real pissed off at the wrench method

getting pissed off often helps with moving stuck parts.

i remember that pic, i think i remember snopes.com saying it was fake.
I had an old bmx freewheel my wheel, and the splines where the tool fit it was really worn down so it wouldn't hold anything. I don't know how the mechanic got it off, hesaid something about 'avin to chop it off, mate'.

Hmm ... i poked around snopes, and couldn't find anything about that particular photo, but did come across a bunch of others that snopes claims are real.

While not identical, it's not dissimilar. Growing up in the prairies, I used to see cloud formations like this pretty commonly whenever a big storm was brewing up ...

That's still a super cool picture. I've seen some crazy/scary thunderheads while sailing, but nothing like that wall of fury coming towards you..
