Lock ring came loose

I'm a new fg rider, and tonight I was doing some skid stops and the lock ring came loose. I put it back on and tightened it, and it seems to be ok, is there something wrong?

It scared the crap out of me to lose all tension on the chain all of the sudden while trying to stop. Not fun.

Bikes: Check the sig to find out

check your threads because they may be stripped. its important for you to have it tight against the cog so check to see about stripping. did you tighten with a lock ring wrench? take it to a bike shop to make sure everything is fine because you don't want to take a chance with that

As your cog tightens after the initial riding, your lock ring loosens. So tighten your lockring. Something to check every couple months...

well, relatively.

if you install a cog correctly, there is no movement.

^seriously, I installed my cog (surly) with ample grease and a chainwhip, tightened the lockring as much as I could, rode up a big hill as fast as I could and tightened whatever slack their was in my lockring. I've been riding on it for 9 or 10 months without any problem whatsoever. My fat ass skids on it day in day out with no problem. take the extra time to do it right the first time and you'll be much happier.

As for the OP: what kind of cog are you using? some of the dirt cheap ones are just a little too thin to cover all the threads, so the lockring cannot butt up against it and hold it in place. If you are using a cog like this, get a better/wider one like a surly or DA.
