Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The fear of that happening is why I don't use the cheap welded stem that came on my Windsor.

Ha! I totally still use that stem on my Windsor. I haven't had any problems with it, but it is hella ugly.

Why would anyone use a stem that cheap when there are so many really nice quill stems out there for cheap like SRs, 3ttts... even used Nittos can be $20 or less.

I was flipping through Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance. He says that stems and handlebars are wear items that you should replace every few years. How old was the stem?

less than 6 months but it his work bike so it got abused alot, i gave him my nitto stem off my look 'til he gets another
moral of the story: dont ride welded stems
the only reason this happened is- there was a garda/cop van beside him at the red light so he didnt blow through it, this is what happened as the light went green.
the funny thing is he sheered his left crank off the bb spindle the week before while starting off at a differents set of lights.

the weld didn't give, the metal approaching the weld did.

why did it rip out from the bottom? was he pulling up on the bars excessively? or did he hit something?

Bikes: Shogun 800 (had to cull the herd)

oh snap.

literally.

edit: I've been having nightmares recently that I installed my quill stem too high and it just falls out while I'm riding in traffic. Solid quill stems wouldn't be at risk of snapping, would they?

no it looks like it failed at the weld. the process of welding affects the metal surrounding also. one reason why i like steel better.

i have that same stem, only anodized black. it's a pull off from a fuji something or another. it looks like **** and i'm glad that it's gonna kill me at some point.

seriously though, just because there's been 2 snapped stems on the same forum in the same month doesn't automatically mean there's an epidemic. how long have you been riding and how many stems have you broken?

How long have you been on this forum and how many broken stems have you heard of? I can't recall more than one or two in the past 10 months I've been on here. It seems pretty rare, but for it to happen twice to the same product doesn't make me feel too good about that stem.
