Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Noise from new singlespeed, help request

I didn't put this in mechanics section because I want only responses from experienced ss users. A new lemond fillmore with ext bearings, gets an off and on again kachunk from the chainline. The bb and cranks are tight and feel good, it doesn't feel like the pedals. It is quiet for awhile then starts for awhile then goes quiet. The chainline looks straight and it runs like a freewheel (don't pedal while coasting). It happens when pedaling. Any ideas?

Stiff chain or tight link? Take your hands and try flexing each section to find a bad spot.

Maybe not enough lube?

Too much slack in the chain?

bump.

Did you ever figure out what was causing this sound? I have also been getting this from my Fillmore and it's driving me a little crazy.
