Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Buy now or wait

Hello guys,
I've been doing a lot of research this weekend. Looking at TONS of bikes, you guys have some sweet looking bikes! Anyways heres my deal. I currently live outside of the city in sarasota which means nothing is in biking distance. I'm moving into St Pete around april next year, here Ill be planning to be a little city boy and ride my bike to school / work because everything is very close in St Pete. So my question how fixed gear bikes retain their price value? My price range is about $500, I've been looking at bianchi frames, pista, and mercier. I could buy now, not use it that much and learn the basics or I could holdout and maybe get a better bike with my money later. So I guess im really trying to ask is will I be able to get a better bike for $500 8 months down the road?

Bigger city -> More deals. Unless you come across some amazing unadvertised yard sale find you can convert. You're looking for used, new, or a conversion?

Mostly looking for new or a used conversion. I dont have the knowledge to do a full conversion. The $399 merciers from bike direct would be something Id buy now.

Then do it! Those are great bikes. You'll be happier having fun riding now than waiting for a slightly better deal anyhow.

From: Jacksonville, Florida

Bikes: Bianchi Axis (commuter), Specialized Tricross S-Works, BMC Team Machine SLT01, Mercier Kilo TT

After seeing the good comments on the Merciers I picked one up myself. A nice bike for the price.. The stock pedals arent great.. I am going to upgrade to clipless
