I have no experience in metal working and was just wondering why you think the welds on the frame were poorly done.

Because they are pitted, and have bubbles in them.

rallen 08-28-07 07:32 AM

I think the IRO frames are awesome. Especially since they cost slightly more than a CK headset.

looks better than on any $150 frame i've ever bought...

Hence, why I said eventually I will upgrade. I didn't say it wasn't worth $150.

Please post pictures.

The welds on all three bikes I received were remarkably clean, and I've even had several people comment on just how seamless they look.

I will try to remember when I get home. They are small imperfections, but they are there.

I'm not trying to get people all excited, I think these bikes are awesome, I just still dont fully understand the amount of money people spend....

I looked at the GB frameset as a chance to get a fixed bike with all the components I wanted for cheap. I would have spent a lot more money if I bought a built model, and then upgraded the components.

Eventually I may get a custom frameset(the 62cm is a bit small), and use all the components from the IRO to complete it.

My camera isn't working very well, and this was the only one that came out well enough to see what I am talking about. The welds at the head tube were similar.

That does suck. Your frame was apparently made on a Monday. The welds on mine look fine to me (and I do welding & metalworking as a hobby). Now we have a sample size of 2.... :)

I'm building up my frame pretty cheaply, but I'm spending a little money on the wheels. I can justify that because I'm building them myself (saving labor) and I know that they can transfer over to a more expensive bike sometime in the future. Handlebars, crankset, and pedals are leftovers from my spares bin.

It looks worse in person.

I have to agree with lvleph. I think mine was made by the guy in training who was just promoted from the janitorial staff. Or maybe his left eye is lower than his right making all his work look like a Dali painting. Not only are the welds chunky and cheap but the seat stays are not level. The left is much lower than the right and if I put my wheel all the way into the drop-outs the wheel touches the left chainstay which is fine if you don't mind riding like a labrador with hip displacia runs. Ya know what grandma Jenkins says, "Ya get what ya pay for."

Now that I would complain about.

I don't doubt you. It's hard to photograph stuff like that.

freeskip you tease you... i've been waiting over a month for pics of this cookie monster bike of yours! quit leaving me in suspense!

freeskihp 08-29-07 10:21 PM

yeah, one thing or another has been keeping me from taking more pictures, what has happened now is that the paint is chipped in several places, the saddle is slightly torn and the tires are now an off-white. Man, **** riding bikes.

Pictures will be up as soon as abeyance has his **** together. We have a little wager going.

cc700 08-29-07 10:25 PM

that's a very good teaser photo. that stem is badass, and those are the weirdest drops i've ever seen... and i can't wait to see each in their entirety.

gargiulo.mike 08-30-07 06:35 PM

thats my definition of a perfect commuter bike. that saddle color goes well with the frame color too.

wearyourtruth 08-30-07 08:26 PM

my perfect commuter bike would have a rear brake, but other than that i agree. it's nice

bonechilling 08-30-07 08:31 PM

Thanks for the compliments. I am actually kind of bothered by the look of the saddle and seatpost, but not enough to actually change anything. Glad to know that other people aren't annoyed like I am.

The only reason why that doesn't have a rear brake is because I haven't been able to find one cheap. I've been looking for one on eBay for two months now, and they always shoot up to $25+ at the last minute. I refuse to pay five times more than what I paid for the front brake, but I've gotta get crackin' on it since I just bought and old ACS freewheel and plan on running this as a single-speed.
