Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

In case folks don't recognize the woman on the bike...

She is / was Beryl Burton... one of the greatest cyclists of all time.

you mean girls doing something they don't care about merely for the attention from men?

I've never heard such a prepostorous idea! I can't concieve of any girl mindlessly succumbing to cultural trends. *looks out window* *sees a hundred identical girls with uggs and stupid sunglasses*

The young ladies that come into my shop to build fixed gear and ss bikes do so because they like riding them and could care less what the boys think... and they usually build much nicer looking bikes.

sorry i didn't realize you could look into people's souls... i wonder how many of these girls thought bikes were dorky in high school and wouldn't be caught dead on one

"yeah, who cares what the boys like! i'll just shop for and accessorize my socially accepted and trendy new purchase. i'm an individual! "

I don't know what most of them were thinking in high school as most are college aged and they all share a common passion for cycling which means we get along famously and talk a great deal about what drives them to ride... among other things.

The nature of the shop, a co-op, draws in people who are very eager to build up their own bikes and I see very few people who are as obsessed about fashion as they are with bicycles... and we get dirty.

And although I cannot look into people's souls... I do listen.

Yeah I've got a bike.

I care because people are mostly fake and someone needs to point it out so that the world can't exist happily ignorant in its own self-delusion. This is especially true with people that think they are counter-culture and individualistic, when in fact, they are the least independent minded people around. I have a real problem with pretension and hypocrisy and the internet lets me express it from the comfort of my own hovel.

Cool. Keep it real. If the people are genuine I'm all for it.

Well I'm all down with smashing illusion. Hammer of the Gods, Twilight of the Idols all that Nietzschean stuff. Fixed gear culture is silly. I still like my fixed gear.

Jeannie Longo: fast in 1979. Still fast in 2008.

I like fast women. Sue me.

Well we see eye to eye then. I like my fixed gear also but I don't like the all conformity surrounding it, as it goes against everything its all about.

Spending a bunch of money to have your bike be the coolest bike is consumerism to the core. It's a middle class "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality

and pretty far from the original messenger schtick of scavenging old track frames
because back in the day they were probably dirt cheap.

-won't see those days again (until everyone abandons this trend).

Any cyclist though has a shtick for upgrades--even if they are in the guise of durability
"these phils and this thomson stem will be **bombproof**"

Everybody's all over Victoria Pendleton. Well just you remember, in Britain you can be a sex symbol and still have bad teeth.

Golden girl Nicole Cooke rides a little fixed now and again.

You care and nobody else and the internet lets you express that in a very annoying way on bikeforums.net in the comfort of your own hovel(?).

I love this girl and the internet lets me express that in the comfort of my own hovel.
