Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

AMEN! There is nothing more depressing than seeing the shoes you had in 5th grade being "reissued" and sold for like 200 bucks.

In fact, the other day I saw a kid rocking a reissue pair of Air Maxes that I owned in like 8th grade. Thanks for making me feel old, jerk.

20 year rule.

"Now that we are in the nineties it's gonna make the eighties look like the seventies did when we were in the eighties".....I think I heard that in a movie once.

That's something of a crock because those two options are not mutually exclusive.

Have fun with your conversion OP! You'll find that dropout spacing is an easily resolvable issue---hubs are quickly respaceable and rear triangles are easily bent.

sure.. steel frames are easy.. the spacing on my rear triangle was like 5mm too wide; it actually makes life easier; I didn't touch it, but just let the bolts suck up the space. Now when I remove the bolts it is like 1mm too wide and the wheel slides in and out nice

convert

Bikes: 1971 Peugeot fixed/single convert

I just converted my 71 Peugeot this past weekend. It took me no more than a few hours on Saturday and I was out practicing trackstands by the afternoon. Converting rocks. It's quick, easy (as long as you're not stupid), there's tons of info on the internets to help you out with the details and when you're done, you feel like you bike is really yours.

Uh, since your username dates from a 1967 TV show, I think you've probably embraced your geezer-hood well enough already.

if you intend to run fenders, you'll probably want to convert. it'll make tire/tube changes, and gear changes if you run 2 in back, a lot easier. now, i'm absolutely certain that some FGF genius will point out that changing a tube on a track-ended frame with fenders is not only possible, but also will only take a few extra seconds of fiddling, etc. we all know that. but, it will be easier on semi-horizontal drops. plus, a converted frame'll more likely have bosses for fenders, which is helpful.

You don't even need to buy a new wheel if you run a "suicide hub" and run both a front and rear brakes.

If the braking on the bike is not good 1st try changing out the pad (Kool Stop Salmons)
