don't most 1 1/8 stems come with shims for use on a 1 inch tube?

You can get after market shims but it can be hard to find the right one (so that it actually looks right) as stems all seem to have different heights. I really like the ITM Eclypse 1" stems. Look quite classy once you deal with the logos. Think they're strictly NOS/2nd these days though. |
Are you incapable of finding any of these yourself? Or is it that nothing looks "great" to your discerning eye?

tell me about some great 1" threadless stems besides the alter.
I don't doubt they exist, but I've been looking and haven't seen anything great. it's not a big deal to shim a 1 1/8", but i would prefer 1" threadless. |

Don't anyone have experience with these?
http://i11.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/a9/85/2c16_1.JPG Looks convenient. Dropped for fast days and up for tooling around. I worry about flex and general lack of stiffness though. Of course, the Look Ergostem is nicer, but that's $200. |

I have a frame and fork at the moment, and I'm going to ditch the fork anyway. So starting from scratch so to speak.
Also, I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a stem, which is where I'm coming from I guess. I've been threadless my whole life, and finding a stem for nothing was always in reach. Maybe I should just buckle down here. And can someone point me to an online store with a good selection? I've only been finding one or two here and there. |
I love Nitto Technomic Deluxe stems. Pics don't do it justice.

The splined ones are reliable, solid, and heavy. I've taken one mountain biking without problems The friction ones are deathtraps. I don't know which category this falls under. |
Dimension 1-1/8 stems come with a shim, so use a 1-1/8 cap instead of the 1 inch one that comes with the headset.
