1" stems - do they exist?

So I recently aquired a track frame - 1" threadless, that I'm building up. I was going to ditch the fork for a nashbar carbon one anyhow, but was unsure whether to stick with threaded or not. In all honesty I love the simplicity of threadless, but think quill stems look pretty cool. So I was mad wavering.

But what it comes down to is that I just can't seem to find any decent stems in either configuration. For quill stems you either have to dig through ebay or go with a cheaper Nitto - like a Dynamic. And for threadless you pretty much have to shim a stem, which is kind of lame.

Any advice fellow forumers?

dude, 1" quality quill stems are all over the place, look at nitto's higher line. So let me get this straight, you have a 1" threadless now? if so just get a 1" threadless stem ie. cinelli alter. if you wanted to convert to threaded you would need to buy a new fork, headset, and stem. so just save some cash and stick with threadless if you like it.

+1! There are loads of great 1" threaded and threadless stems out there.

eskachig 08-20-07 07:49 PM

I have a frame and fork at the moment, and I'm going to ditch the fork anyway. So starting from scratch so to speak.

Also, I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a stem, which is where I'm coming from I guess. I've been threadless my whole life, and finding a stem for nothing was always in reach. Maybe I should just buckle down here.

And can someone point me to an online store with a good selection? I've only been finding one or two here and there.

BRANDUNE 08-20-07 08:02 PM

so is the fork you have now threaded or threadless?, im confused

freeskihp 08-20-07 08:03 PM

you still have a 1" headtube so keep that in mind, is the fork you are buying from nashbar threadless?

eskachig 08-20-07 08:09 PM

Either one - that's the choice :)

It's not like I have a shortage of threadless bikes... maybe it's time to cross over to the dark side for a while.

freeskihp 08-20-07 08:11 PM

if you are gonna get the S.U.L just get a threadless, it will be stiffer and generally nicer

jayrooney 08-20-07 08:14 PM

tell me about some great 1" threadless stems besides the alter.
I don't doubt they exist, but I've been looking and haven't seen anything great.
it's not a big deal to shim a 1 1/8", but i would prefer 1" threadless.

Isn't that the truth in the whole debate anyhow? In any case I agree that it just looks too modern, though the faceplate design is convenient.

marqueemoon 08-20-07 08:23 PM

There are some Kelly ones on ebay right now for cheap.

But then it won't be reversible. I kind of like that kelly too - just wish it had the faceplate design.

I have to say - I never appreciated my Bianchi Pista threadless stem before - I want another one! Preferably in black, lol.

Don't anyone have experience with these?

Looks convenient. Dropped for fast days and up for tooling around. I worry about flex and general lack of stiffness though. Of course, the Look Ergostem is nicer, but that's $200.

there's a lot of 1" mutants around.

I have one and it's too flexy.

Cinelli Vai and shim it. Shim is inclued with stem. I love mine.

No need to be snide - 1" stems are clearly rare. Most of the advice in this thread is just to shim a 1 1/8 stem.

That's probably what I'll end up doing, but still, that's kind of annoying.

MIN 08-21-07 02:59 PM

What's wrong with shimming the stem? It makes zero difference but probably results in cheaper costs for you since 1" is not mass produced like 1 1/8" is.
