I trust a chain over a belt. I dunno-belt drives have been around for years but the idea never caught on.

Less noise, and I think it is more efficient. I think it would be interesting.

A belt is much less likely to break. Weighs much less. And is totally silent.

and i don't think it needs to be lubricated.

the belt may weight less than a chain, but wouldn't the big cog and chainring more than make up for it?

That is correct.
The only downside is they dont look as cool as a chain IMO. :)

Belts are not as easily repaired.

The belt is a little lighter than a chain, but the pulleys are a lot heavier than sprockets. Also, in my experience, belts break more easily than a chain when they are stressed or damaged by something like a rock getting in the pulley. And they don't handle any misalignment very well either.

They are quiet though.

Actually, they make spare links for those belts for emergency repairs.

There are def pros and cons to both.
I prefer the good ole chain on my bike but i think the belt is pretty cool.
Ive ridden a belt drive mamachari in Japan. Theyre pretty common.
Also seen quite a few shaft drives too.

What year was that? Some time in the late 80's/early 90's in BMX Plus! they had a belt drive, a shaft drive, and the first two-wheel drive bike from one of the big trade shows.

Is there anything keeping the belt from slipping off that pulley?

Uh, belt tension and the flatness of the belt. Just like on timing belts on cars.
That belt wont slip off as long as the tension is set and kept.

I even thought I had posted in that thread too, but I guess not.

Belts are great and all, but they won't catch on. Folks have pushed belt-drives for bikes every year, probably since the 20's or something, and most bikes still use chains. There's something to be said for persistence though.
