What exactly would be the benefit of that? (Not sarcasm)

Astronomical 08-22-07 11:52 AM

wtf belt drive ss/fixed?

Nims 08-22-07 11:52 AM

More like...

coming a long time ago, and no one was excited about it then either! (That's what she said)

musicsucks 08-22-07 11:55 AM

it would be pretty low maintenance.
But.. one size fits all?

MIN 08-22-07 12:02 PM

I trust a chain over a belt. I dunno-belt drives have been around for years but the idea never caught on.

Less noise, and I think it is more efficient. I think it would be interesting.

deathhare 08-22-07 12:03 PM

A belt is much less likely to break. Weighs much less. And is totally silent.

zip22 08-22-07 12:04 PM

and i don't think it needs to be lubricated.

the belt may weight less than a chain, but wouldn't the big cog and chainring more than make up for it?

Belts are suppose to last longer too.

That is correct.
The only downside is they dont look as cool as a chain IMO. :)

moe sizlack 08-22-07 12:08 PM

Do not want

lvleph 08-22-07 12:14 PM

Belts are not as easily repaired.

The belt is a little lighter than a chain, but the pulleys are a lot heavier than sprockets. Also, in my experience, belts break more easily than a chain when they are stressed or damaged by something like a rock getting in the pulley. And they don't handle any misalignment very well either.

They are quiet though.

Actually, they make spare links for those belts for emergency repairs.

There are def pros and cons to both.
I prefer the good ole chain on my bike but i think the belt is pretty cool.
Ive ridden a belt drive mamachari in Japan. Theyre pretty common.
Also seen quite a few shaft drives too.

What year was that? Some time in the late 80's/early 90's in BMX Plus! they had a belt drive, a shaft drive, and the first two-wheel drive bike from one of the big trade shows.

Is there anything keeping the belt from slipping off that pulley?
Also that looks kinda heavy.

Uh, belt tension and the flatness of the belt. Just like on timing belts on cars.
That belt wont slip off as long as the tension is set and kept.

Do you guys honestly not remember having this whole pointless conversation a few months ago?

How much ADD do you has?

Me have ADD. What are you speaking Greece? lol

I even thought I had posted in that thread too, but I guess not.

Aeroplane 08-22-07 12:49 PM

Belts are great and all, but they won't catch on. Folks have pushed belt-drives for bikes every year, probably since the 20's or something, and most bikes still use chains. There's something to be said for persistence though.

And mine was a reference to CKY2K

No one ever seems to get my humour. Oh well. I figured the speaking Greece part would have given it away.

Let's see if this works.

Sheldon Brown

I want to see his opinion belt drives.

I want to see his opinion belt drives.

I think there are two different discussions people are having here.

1) Merits of chain vs. belt drive as a drive system, isolated.

2) Functionality of chain vs. belt drive on a bicycle...

The first one is a silly discussion because almost no one here (myself included) has the necessary information on the topics (not that it ever stops us from pretending we do)

The second one really isn't much of a discussion because I think all the pros and cons are immediately obvious...

Not sure what my point is since most of our discussions here are fruitless.

As you were.

deathhare 08-22-07 01:06 PM

its aint NJS :p

Astronomical 08-22-07 01:11 PM

Weezy wouldn't ride a bike if it's ain't NJS, he'd say it's ain't proper.
