I'm goin to be in New Orleans in about 3 weeks for a few days and i'm bringin my ride. wonder if any of you guys on here had any places to share with me that i should go to, any (vegan/veggie) restaurants you recommend. pretty much anything worth doing im not going to find in some dumb travel book. thanks in advance!

Please dont be offended by this, but you might want to reconsider the vegan thing while in New Orleans for the fish. Seriously, best fish anyone will ever have. If thats not a possibility, feel free to ignore this.

House of Dance in Feathers is a museum to the Mardi Gras Indians. Its in the backyard of the guy that started it, Ronald Lewis, and is in the Lower 9th. The building was designed and built by students from Tulane (I believe, I'm drawing a blank right now).

There are vegetarian restaurants scattered through the French Quarter, but I can't remember their names or locations. Be sure to get a french-fry poo' boy though, it changed my life.

aidan gill i checked it out on google and found out it's some old school barber shop seems pretty neat

i've got a list of vegan places i plan on visiting and i can't wait to try a po' boy. that museum sounds pretty ill too

there's a number of places scattered around the french quarter. this is actually a pretty decent little guide to vegetarian eating in that area: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art31749.asp . there's also more places around uptown.

as far as things to do, what do you like?

p.s. and if you need a place to crash for whatever reason, i've got sofa space.

Oh yeah, play it safe at night, NOLA can be a rough city.

For riding the roads aren't the best (its been a bit since I've been but I'm going to doubt that they've improved on much) because of potholes, etc. I noticed that outside of the downtown food delivery people at night I didn't see many cyclists, but most of my time was spent in Treme.

yeah the roads in the city blow for the most part, but you don't usually have to go too far out of the way for a smooth ride.

thanks. i really just want to explore the city and i definetely want to go to a jazz club or two. other than that i'm not really sure. i want to do stuff i'm only able to do in NOLA and check out NOLA culture. thanks for offering you sofa but i'm good with a place to stay:)

edit: btw i have a link that has a bunch of vegan friendly restaurants on it as well some of them are the same as that list. i'll post it when i'm outta work

I'm from new orleans, mostly..
Vegetarian food can be found in the marigny, up frenchman (I can't remember the name), and a few scattered places. it is the exact opposite of a veg-freindly town, unless you eat thai, or indian, both of which are not very widespread.

Now, I left 4 years ago, pre-katrina.

It is an awful city to bike in. Crime is widespread (this means you), streets are terrible (worse than 3rd world) and it's hot as he77, and doesn't cool down at night.

Michael's bicycles may still be on frenchman, also.
ride the streetcar all the way down St. Charles, it's a dollar.
you may prefer the lower decatur/marigny to the bourbon/upper quarter scene.

there are a number of beautiful plantations around the area also.

awesome, Frenchman Street in the quarter is a good place to check out good jazz. if you're checking out jazz clubs, you should definitely try to make it to Preservation Hall.

also, be prepared to fall in love with the city. I know I did.

I thought bourbon st. was a waste of time, only walked along there when I had to.

and Uptown Tattoo is the jam.

i'm going to tulane. my classes don't start until wednesday, so i should be completely free to ride or whatever if anyone wishes to do so, although I shipped my bike and I don't know for sure when it will get there.

there are some local mediterranean and indian and mexican places around tulane that are cool for the vegan delights. shoot me a pm when you're bike comes in and we'll go riding.

Snug Harbor for Jazz. In the Marigny area as well. Also see if Cafe Brazil is still there. I used to live there too, and get back once in a while to see family.

What are you going to do with a vegan Po'Boy though? I have to know.....

I have a cousin--big guy who's a cop--get mugged while on the bike. Came at him with a lead pipe. That said, I'd still ride in the city, but on just certain routes and areas.

Yep. See Bourbon St. for about 5 minutes and run away fast...But there are aspects of NO that make me fall in love too whenever I go back. Marigny, Warehouse District, Garden District, Uptown, Upper Esplanade.... lots of cool micro areas off the beaten path. I've always had a strong love/hate relationship with the city. It has a very strong pull, but it's so dysfunctional. And it's so unlike NY. So much more casual and laid back. Kind of a time warp.

Hard to say exactly. The city is very spread out and you can go from something that feels safe and good, to Baghdad-ish pretty quickly. It not like NY where you'll feel safety in numbers. It's way, way less populated (especially in the non-touristy areas). And if you find yourself alone on a dark street, you'll get that paranoid feeling creep in.

Did you say you'll have a car? If so, I wouldn't be too worried at all about getting around. If you don't you'll just be on foot, bike, cab,, or the street car. Which then restrict how much and how far you'll get around. I don't know. I know the place really well. And when I go back, my family is in shock at times when I say what I did or where I went. I kind of have the mentality that if I cower then the bad guys win. So I try get around and mix it up and do whatever I want. But, again, I grew up there and know it really well. So it's always tough to give advise to people visiting. Especially people such as yourself who don't want to do the Disneyland version tour of the city.

Living in New Orleans is like having a crazy girlfriend that you really are into. You keep going back, although you know she's no good for you.
