Cranks
Sorry to start off here with a "which one" kind of question, but I need a new pair of cranks that aren't going to cost me a fortune, but are very nice all the same. I was thinking sugino 75's with an fsa track ring. Opinons? I don't really want to spend a fortune, so I'm up for any options, but I'd like to try to keep it track.
Thanks guys. |
i love my stronglights.

If 75's are within your budget, then go with that. If not, go with RD's. Don't forget that you will likely need a new bottom bracket as well.
|
I want a pair of 75s so bad, but only because I've seen them for sale some places (but always sold out) in anodized blue and it would go with my bike so well. If anyone knows a site or place selling these, lemme know.
|
ben's cycle has a lot of anodized suginos in now.
complete with anodized chainrings and bolts. |
do any of you guys ride RD2's? how do you like them? Are there any other cranks that you guys recommend? I'd ride superbe's, but they seem hard to find in 165's...
|
I have two S75 cranksets.
One Black and the other Silver. I put a Sugino Zen Messenger Chainring on the Silver... it looks great and it's a great combination. I plan on getting another Zen Messenger for the Black set. It's a good alternative to the S75. Less expensive and better looking IMO. The Zen Messenger is 144BCD and the Messenger is 130BCD. |
ive got black sugino 75s (170mm) and an fsa pro track chainring 46t. both are brand new..still in the package. i am wanting to sell them because im building up a different bike and im not going to need them. i will sell it total for 160.00 plus shipping. let me know if anyone is interested.

I've used Profile bmx cranks on my last two builds. While they virtually eliminate chainline issues, and are strong, they are heavy and may not suit the asthetics of the build. You can run bmx chainwheels or add on a spider and run whatever bcd you want (110,94,104, 4 bolt).
|
Miche is a good and less expensive option as well.
That being said, I love my Sugino 75's. |

I have some RDs on my conversion and I think they're fine for the price. The only thing to watch out for: my BF also has the RDs, but his is noticably un-round to the point where if you spin the cranks, you can see the chain tightening/loosening at different parts of rotation.
|
Are the RD's really a budget set of cranks? I was definately gonna go for them because the popularity premium of the 75's seems to not be worth it, but this is the first opinion I've read on them and it's not really flattering. Maybe I'd be better off with a vintage Gippieme or Campy crankset, which would match my frame better anyway.
|
i have never been more impressed with a crankset than my 75's.. they are top notch
|
The RD's are Sugino's "budget" cranks, though they're are better than many other cranks out there. I'm more than happy with my RD's, but you said you'd like to keep it track so iff you have the means, get the 75's.
I have a weakness for the black 75's. |
My miche primatos are beautiful and strong. the only thing that sucks is their 135 bcd.

Specific questions get specific answers. A better way to phrase your question is: "What are my best crank + chainring options for $200 or less?" |
sugino75, nothin better period!

I have the RDs, and I'm happy. for everybody;s info, they are sold as road doubles and SS/FG cranks. They are all marked RD2. the right crank is marked rd2r. I'm running a road chainring though. If you do not want to limit yourself to track only chainrings, (yes, i know that this is kind of awkward phrasing, I'm referring to BCD) you may want to check out the RDs.
|
As long as we're asking questions.
Is a 42t chainring too small with which to start? |
Anyone else think it's funny that a guy named "Iridestreet" needs "track cranks"?
|
depends on the cog. but you'll probably be spinning a lot to keep up.
|
All I want is some blue cranks, that's it.

What benefit does that bolt pattern give anyway?
