legal theft! hahahahahaha!

kyle! 09-06-07 08:06 PM

yeah, was it considered that the person might have somewhere to go when they find that their wheel is "stolen"? i mean, if it happens it happens. but i would be more pissed if someone wanted to "teach me a lesson" and make me late for something, etc.

yeah. you should have a timeout for even bringing this up. go to your room and think about what you said.

kjohnnytarr 09-06-07 08:08 PM

Ten minutes later, a driver sees him riding a little to close to the center of the lane, decided to clip him to teach him a lesson. 30 minutes later, a thread is started about it. :)

ken cummings 09-06-07 08:15 PM

We have enough nannies in the Government who think they know how to run our lives better then we do. Not much I can do about them and the IRS thugs who steal for them. If I am stupid enough to leave my bike unlocked, tough ****. If I catch someone messing with it to teach me a lesson a busted kneecap is the least they can expect.

I've left my fixed "free-locked" (front wheel krypto'd to frame) for short periods many a time, back when I was messengering that's what everyone did. Of course, it is a little different when a person is leaving it out for long periods of time. And people walking around with a bike locked to itself kinda standout. Good way to get yourself arrested.

Leaving a note, I suppose I could see doing that... taking property that belongs to someone else, for whatever reason, we have other words to describe.

BRANDUNE 09-06-07 09:34 PM

I have a QR front and I leave it unlocked all the time, its a p.o.s. so I dont see the need. I could imagine making a big deal if these were really nice wheels, but other wise who cares. I would rather have a crackhead steal my **** than some dumbass kid trying to prove a point.

Foxtrot 09-06-07 09:34 PM

you shouldn't do that.

mander 09-06-07 09:56 PM

I love the wooden lock that always comes up in GISes

filtersweep 09-06-07 10:56 PM

There is the other side of the coin--- my guess is the OP's seat (and post) and bars are not locked up. All it takes is a hex wrench and I could teach a lesson or two about leaving parts so available. It would be hilarious!

a whole 20 minutes talking yourself into why it is appropriate to steal someone else's stuff is pretty low...

FazeOne 09-07-07 12:10 AM

I ride around campus and see poorly locked bikes all day. some with cables so thin i could clip through them with scissors if i wanted to. but i guess theft isn't a big problem at my school. I see the same bikes locked in the same places day after day..

jodypolk 09-07-07 12:40 AM

i'm still lolling @ "after what is probably legally theft".

and such as.

Tangsooyuk 09-07-07 01:20 AM

Use your own u-lock and lock their wheel up to their frame for them.

marcusprice 09-07-07 02:02 AM

why is it everyone's business to teach someone a lesson"? how about just leave a note? instead of being pissed of and without a bike, theyll still be with a bike and still have learned a lesson.

parkerlewis 09-07-07 02:04 AM

I dont lock my bike up properly either....I have a rear sugino carbon disc that is never locked, and a front all-NJS wheel that is never locked to the frame. I also have brooks/nitto jaguar that someone could take with a allenkey, plus the rest.
I just dont care enough to worry about this all the time. I only lock my bike in nice steezy areas that are lit up though, and in Japan. People pinch bikes here too though, including my beautiful 'black standard' tombo/mama with 650Y pegs! I loved that girl.
If the frame is still there, I can shed a tear and start shopping around for some nice new wheels. I am running out of reasons to buy more stuff.

eMwolB 09-07-07 02:08 AM

Today, Iwas sitting and watching my bike from afar. I saw some dude checking it out for about 20 minutes. I wasn't sure if he was going to steal it or not but felt like smacking him in the skull and shoving my foot deep in his ***** for even thinking about it....just to teach him a lesson of course.
Tomorrow if he looks at it again, should I do the deed?

EMT 09-07-07 02:16 AM

pure stupidity

why why why??

Dumpsterlife 09-07-07 05:35 AM

fair game...

I'm amazed at the groupthink on this site. You all seemed to ignore some very key parts of my original post

1) I didn't steal the kid's wheel.
I didn't want the kid's **** to get jacked up; wasn't going to keep the wheel, and had planned to leave my number so he could get it back. In any case, I didn't do any of these as I decided all in all it was a bad idea and not really my job to teach the kid a lesson.
2) I left him a note about how to lock up your bike.
When you have an expensive wheel such as the Mavic, leaving it unlocked in a city is just a bad idea, I'm sure he'd be really pissed if someone stole it (again, one of the reasons I didn't).
3)I DIDN'T STEAL IT.
I didn't steal the kids stuff, you all seem to be on my dick about it, but none of you really seem to consider the fact that I didn't do it. I thought about it, and with good intentions. No malice was in my mind at any time. Crime of compassion?
All in all, get off of my ****. I didn't do it, wouldn't do it. Next time you all get on someone's ass about something he/she didn't do, consider their intentions and the outcome before you all neglect to think and just jump on the bandwagon.

eMwolB 09-07-07 06:20 AM

You just re-ignited the fire...run for cover! : )

I think everyone's problem is that you just dont ****ing get it. You still clearly dont understand.
If it took you 20 minutes to discern between right and wrong in this situation then something is wrong somewhere. Like, in your brain, deep, deep inside your brain.
Also, gettin all righteous now and telling everyone to "get off your ****" just makes you look even more stupid.

It wasn't literally 20 minutes, I didn't really expect anyone to take that time interval literally. 20 minutes is my stock time interval, and when did 'gettin all righteous now' and explaining yourself become the same thing?

Ok, how long was it? 10 minutes? 5 minutes? 1 minute?
Does it really matter?

lamalex 09-07-07 06:44 AM

2-3, and according to you, it does matter.

Also, even if it were only 2, which is a LONG time in this case...youre still a ******.

At my work's bike rack there's always a few people who lock only their front wheel to the bike rack, leaving everything else unlocked. I used work time to make drawings in Paint on proper locking technique and left it on one of the bikes, and it worked, the bike hasn't been back since :).

See, here is my thing...

Perhaps, if people started just ignoring the fact that things weren't locked and just respecting personal property, perhaps one day we all wouldn't have to lock our bikes up. Yes, I am being idealistic, but it is just my thought. I know this will never happen in the States, but there are other countries out there where you can leave things outside and they don't get stolen. It reminds me of a good friend of mine who grew up in Canada and never locked her door and would just leave her bike sitting on her porch. The funny/sad thing is after all those years of never locking her bike in Canada it got stolen here while it was locked up properly outside. Pity. Again, I know it is idealistic, but maybe one day we can leave our bikes in a rack all day and comeback to it at night without locking it.
