Maybe these guys can help teach the guy a lesson :)

If I ever saw someone doing what the OP proposed, I'd beat them into a ******** coma with their U-lock. What does the OP or anyone else care how someone locks up their bike? Don't be so bloody arrogant.

parkerlewis 09-08-07 11:42 AM

just steal it already..

rtucker 09-08-07 02:06 PM

I think everyone is missing the obvious point here, if you see two bikes with unlocked quick-release front wheels it ISN'T okay to steal them, it IS okay to switch them. Especially if they come out at the same time and accuse each other of stealing their wheels.

a [roughly estimated] quote from ira ryan, pdx framebuilder:

"in my opinion, all bike thieves should have their balls nailed to the floor of a burning house. the words are harsh but the sentiment is right."

personally i think bike thieves should be chained to a parking meter and beaten with ulocks and chains by every messenger in town, until he is dead. Then hung up for all to see with a bike sign "I was a bike thief, then they caught me"

or else drag them live thru the alleys and streets until there is nothing left but a bloody lump.

you think thats going to stop them?

phff they did something very similar in the Roman era for adultery. You think it stopped adultery? phff
They also chopped off your man, you think that stopped it? phff

bike thieves, car thieves, and thieves in general will keep doing it...Part of life my friend.

PluperfectArson 09-09-07 01:26 AM

While I was out and about in Portland tonight (for the first time in ages), I saw so many improperly locked bikes, but I never thought to steal anything, not once!

Also, I like the construction barricades next to the Roseland that say "Do not park, lean, or lock bikes up to the barricade," but, when you look at the barricade, there are about fifty (50) bikes locked up to it. :p

Everything is fine here, everyone is fine here.

All in all though -- maybe leave a friendly note, but I'd even think carefully about my motivations before I did that.

Somebody jacks my front wheel, I'm gonna come ask you about it.

Also, id like to thanks my family and my bike for putting up with all my crap and crooked ass skids into parked cars.
I know there's someone im leaving out or would...so, ill just end it here.
Thanks you all!

A couple of years ago, I was at a parents orientation for my son's new school. A parent stood up and said to the principal, "my son said that he doesn't need to lock his bike at school." Now some of us thought this was pretty funny until the principal said, "why would he lock it?, no bike has ever been stolen." Even now, a few years later, no bike is locked at the school, and none have been stolen. So, would you like to know where this is so you can go there and teach the whole school a lesson?

... No, I think that's beautiful that they have an environment like that. There's a school near where I grew up where I wouldn't think twice about leaving my bike unlocked, even for a few hours. However, this school is not located in a large city where bike theft is common. So it's great that your son's school has such an environment, that's awesome, I hope my children's school will be like that, but that doesn't apply to the situation at hand, where the wheel was likely to be stolen, and not by me, by someone who would want to sell it for cash.

First the skid salute and now this. Time to hang it up greenhorn.

I think I'll stab some holes in your tires to teach you a lesson that you should carry a patch kit and a pump. Let me know where you lock your bike up.

The skid salute is cool. I don't care what anyone says. And I carry a patch kit and a pump in my bag at all times.

Good, then you'll be prepared to fix those punctures that are inflicted to teach you a lesson.

Hey, I once stole a bike that wasn't locked up properly to prove a point.

Of course, it was my bike, and the guy who borrowed it wasn't following my locking instructions. It was funny seeing his face when I asked how my bike was doing, and if I could "check something" on it.
