Maybe I shouldn't have made fun of the 3Rensho, but I do think that putting drops on it was silly. I don't know what makes it "fake" or "pretend" besides the fact that I won't (can't) race it. But it interests me, and that makes me happy.

You're mean, Dutret. Again, what is it that you would do in my position? What do you suggest?

Ryan- I meant track ends all along. My bad. That Guerciotti is going to be incredible.

It's fake or pretend because it's a tt bike you are grinding braze ons and brake bridges off.

How disks are different from spoked wheels?
They ride like ****, catch wind and make a lot of noise. They also make you marginally faster but if you're not racing that doesn't matter.

I wouldn't have bought it in the first place but since you have I would use parts I have laying around and maybe some old flipped scott drops to make a joke bike, that's really all it's good for.
I sure as hell wouldn't buy a disk and further drive up the prices for people who actually could use one. And if I was doing something as stupid as dumping money on that peice of crap I wouldn't complain about others who had done something similiar.

So you guys actually remember who said what, about which bike, on which thread?

ryand 09-14-07 03:12 PM

bikeforums is life.

...

no.

in this case he said it in this thread but usually I only remember the especially absurd comments.

maybe next year. The only things visibly not stock are the saddle, seatpost, pedals, some of the chainrings and a few times a year aerobars.

How many chainrings does your fixed gear Pista Concept have?

ryand 09-14-07 09:40 PM

...or maybe he meant he switches out chainrings from time to time...

deathhare 09-15-07 07:30 AM

or maybe he is lying. ohhhhh!

5 chainrings and three cogs it was actually bought for it's intended purpose not as a status symbol so that means money goes to things that effect how fast I go, like gearing, rather then how it looks.

First race is next Sunday in Baltimore. I'm thinking about running a 44t ring in the front with a chain guard and the Sram Force in the back though. The 50 / 34 up front doesn't give me a lot of good options for cx.

You shuold do full C-Record on that.

Yeah, there are lots of single chainrings at cyclocross races, although I pass lots of people with my set-up (48-38 x 12-32). I will never understand why people still run 10 speed road cassettes (12-23, 12-25) on cross bikes. You would do so so so much better spinning on a 9 speed mountain cassette (12-32, 12-34) as I often do. I'm contemplating moving down to a single with chain guards on either side, but I find myself using my big ring for flat sprints.

Boy, I think I really offended him.

By the way, Dutret, I ended up picking up a disc with both a 7spd freecassette and track threads, so I'll likely be setting it up as both so I can use it for my road rides. Surly makes track ends with a derailleur hanger.

And honestly man, my disc is far from a status symbol or fashion accessory. I am far from fashionable, I can assure you. I will admit though that part (a small part) of the reason I got it is because it compliments the bike.

oh really? What exact purpose does it serve beyond that? You say you don't race. A disk is therefore nothing beyond a ****ty ride and a fashion accessory for you. Would you have gotten it if you hadn't gotten that frame? Isn't the whole reason therefore that it compliments the bike.

If your going to be a trend chasing piece of **** driving up the prices on whatever looks cool even though you have no use for it at least be man enough to admit that thats all that you are.

Those old disks sell for about twice what they should(and about 60% more then I can afford) thanks to *******s like you. So yeah it kind of pisses me off when a few hundreths of a second that a disk means costs me a race thanks to you and your ilk. FOAD

cc700 09-16-07 12:48 AM

as always you're getting way too worked up over nothing... by keeping your blood pressure down and 'taking a chill pill' (calming the **** down), you could more than make up for those few hundredths of a second in your race, dutret.

supply and demand is a *****, ain't it?

Gambutrol 09-16-07 01:10 AM

Disc wheels (much like pursuit frames) work well for speed and as fashion accessories and I love them as both.

Hup, you caught me! 10 hipster-catching points to Dutret, the Hipsterminator.

Isn't there a wheel that compliments the bike without having it blow you over due to a slight breeze?

Or perhaps the anger would make me push a little bit harder. Aero wheels on the other hand would have a definite effect while the *******s on this board are the furthest thing from my mind when I'm racing.

Yeah supply and demand is a ***** and it's a free country so buy whatever the **** you want. If people didn't buy **** they didn't need just so that others could see it the economy would collapse. I will however continue to ***** about it and not excuse the shtieaters who do it in a way that effects be just cause they don't see themselves as fashionable. After a few beers and a disk being one(and the easiest remedied) of the reasons I didn't do as well as I could have at a race it may even get me a little mad. I will also continue to despise the type of trash that lives a life of conspicuous consumption in general and the hypocritical half assed counter-culture ones even more.

I don't know about you, but I still see disc wheels in the $100-$200 range on eBay and Craigslist regularly, which I think is totally reasonable. They command more money than they used to, but clearly more people are racing track now than were just a year ago, so it's equally likely that track racers are driving up the prices, as it is hipsters.

bward1028 09-16-07 09:12 AM

Here's a picture of a bike. it doesn't have disc wheels, so we can all be happy.

Wow Dutret, relax and let people buy what they want. If you are just going to put people down all the time for using products how they want to, why don't you go do it on a blog?

I have not seen a decent one all summer for under $250 while they used to $100-$150.

While it is true that more people are racing usacycling numbers aren't showing it yet. This suggests that while weeknight practice series are seeing an increase in ridership the majority of these people aren't serious yet. And really with the exception of a handful of hipsters who ride them around town as well as the track and roadies who took them off their tt bikes get I don't see many aerowheels on low cat riders bikes. I have seen manyfold increase in the number I see being ridden around by jackasses like bassmoniker and blickblocks(though women like her seem to be fairly rare for some reason).
