Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Theres a pedestrian/bike bridge in minneapolis called stone arch bridge. It's close to 35w into downtown, so after the bridge went down, it was flooded with gawkers. It's usually got at least a few idiots walking in the bike lanes, but for a week or two after the bridge fell it was absurd to even attempt to use it to get into downtown.

The time we tried, on top of all the people milling about trying to see the bridge wreckage, there was a cop driving down the center of the bridge(taking up all bike lane space) at about 3 mph, and becasue people were standing around on the sides, where you're supposed to walk, people were walking in the bike lanes.

I did my usual thing of riding extremely slow behind them as they walk (in this case, 4 guys shoulder to shoulder taking up the lane and then some) and casually asked "pretty awesome bike lane, isn't it?". I must have startled them as they kinda jumped outa the way, but then i heard him say "an 'excuse me' would work" in a snide tone, so i skidded, turned around, and said, "or, you could just watch where you are walking and it wouldn't have been a problem in the first place."

Dude was pissed, girl and I rode off laughing.

It was right in front of a coffee shop and everyone started yelling and ****, I didnt stop or anything (had to get to work). There was a cyclist in front of me that was totally oblivious to the whole thing and a guy maybe ten yards behind me that I could hear laughing. I just dont get how the guy could see the first rider go by and still just walk out into the middle of the lane without looking, is wasnt like I was flying down the street or anything, I had just woke up and jumped on my bike.
I think today's lesson is stake out your space when you're riding on Broadway. People pull this **** all the time. The width of the door zone is about the same as that of the clueless idiot zone.

I personally would have stopped. My job is really not that important.

I hit some dude head on once. Neither of us were hurt, and we both had a nice laugh about it. He smelled nice.

If this was on Broadway, there's a good chance that everyone who saw him didn't really give a **** anyways. They probably all wished that they had a chance to do that on their brakeless fixed gears too.

I still think you should have gotten off of your bike, thrown it at the guy, and given him the pile driver to end all pile drivers. Then you should have done the "suck it" motion that the nWo guys used to do and stolen his van so you could make it to work on time.

Yeah, I have to agree. You have the "rights and responsibilities" of a vehicle. I would call this a hit and run. It doesn't matter whose "fault" it was.
