Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

moving across country

im moving from philly to san diego.
ill have my bikes on a rack in the back. its inevitable that ill run into some rain storms and wet weather along the way.

im thinking ill take off my chain and seat then wrap the bike with a rain tarp.

has anyone else taken a trip like this before?
what have you done?

Bikes: so many

I would not wrap them with a tarp. The thing will flap around and could damage the paint no matter how you secure it. A little water never hurt anything, bikes are designed to get wet now and then...

If you do remove the seat, don't remove the seatpost unless you want a bottom bracket full of water. I wouldn't bother with the chain, just oil it up before you set out and it'll be fine.
