Gordiep 09-16-07 04:23 PM

That's ridiculous.

Seriously.

willypilgrim 09-16-07 04:42 PM

I wonder how well that chainring could be re-made in an appropriate size.

musicsucks 09-16-07 05:13 PM

i'd kinda like to run that with like a 30t rear cog

bward1028 09-16-07 05:38 PM

my first thought is about how far i would have to roll up my pant leg to avoid getting caught

na975 09-16-07 05:43 PM

i try clicking on that red X, but i don't see anything wtf...: (

Hell, with a ring that big I'd have to be careful not to cut my sack.

roughrider504 09-16-07 07:38 PM

Sometimes people would just pose with bikes like that, might not of been actually ridden.

crbrown 09-16-07 07:40 PM

Why is there a third wheel between his legs? Does it make it go faster?

Astronomical 09-16-07 07:41 PM

It's ok guys, it's 1" pitch, it's only like 30t. :P (jklolz in case you're ********)

666pack 09-16-07 07:44 PM

talk about short stems...

Straws 09-16-07 07:44 PM

he might as well have a direct drive hub on the front.

That bike is for riding in a draft to set speed records. Those bikes go ****ing fast. I remember reading that the record was well over 150 mph in the early mid 20th century, and i have no idea how high itd be now.

Boy...are you sure those numbers are right? I remember reading about the first bike to beat 60mph, running behind a train, inside a hood, over a specially laid track.

Last I'd heard, the record for human-powered vehicle was around 81mph...

EDIT-- I just did some digging around...that drafting stuff is nuts. The 150 number is from John Howard, in the Bonneville Salt Flats...behind a rocket car or something.

OK that figure I recall must have been in km/h. It was a really interesting profile of this guy who set a land speed record in the early 20th century. I wish I could find it...

Edit!! Found it. This is just ****ing awesome. I messed up the speed and the era, it was just about 130 mph in the 60s, pushing 130*15: http://cycling.ahands.org/bicycling/datewithdeath.html

"In case of fatal accident, I beg of the spectators not to feel sorry for me. I am a poor man, an orphan since the age of eleven, and I have suffered much. Death holds no terror for me. This record attempt is my way of expressing myself. If the doctors can do no more for me, please bury me by the side of the road where I have fallen."

how can you possibly **** with this

dmotoguy 09-16-07 09:14 PM

pansie.. thats only 220 gear inches

Yeah, curiously, he seems a bit undergeared. At 120 rpms assuming 27 inch wheel size he'd only be doing 83. According to the article he had to do 180 rpms (three rotations per second) to hit his top speed. That's consistent with his pushing 220 gi, since he'd be doing 42 mph at 60 rpms and 42*3 is almost 130. (gotta love Sheldon's calculator!)

Edit: After reading tfa it says he was pushing 225.

Astronomical 09-16-07 09:44 PM

but think about the effort it takes to get going fast enough to control that thing versus the effort it takes to spin really fast.
