Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I wonder how well that chainring could be re-made in an appropriate size.

Hell, with a ring that big I'd have to be careful not to cut my sack.

Sometimes people would just pose with bikes like that, might not of been actually ridden.

Why is there a third wheel between his legs? Does it make it go faster?

That bike is for riding in a draft to set speed records. Those bikes go ****ing fast. I remember reading that the record was well over 150 mph in the early mid 20th century, and i have no idea how high itd be now.

Boy...are you sure those numbers are right? I remember reading about the first bike to beat 60mph, running behind a train, inside a hood, over a specially laid track.

Last I'd heard, the record for human-powered vehicle was around 81mph...

EDIT-- I just did some digging around...that drafting stuff is nuts. The 150 number is from John Howard, in the Bonneville Salt Flats...behind a rocket car or something.

OK that figure I recall must have been in km/h. It was a really interesting profile of this guy who set a land speed record in the early 20th century. I wish I could find it...

Edit!! Found it. This is just ****ing awesome. I messed up the speed and the era, it was just about 130 mph in the 60s, pushing 130*15: https://cycling.ahands.org/bicycling/datewithdeath.html

"In case of fatal accident, I beg of the spectators not to feel sorry for me. I am a poor man, an orphan since the age of eleven, and I have suffered much. Death holds no terror for me. This record attempt is my way of expressing myself. If the doctors can do no more for me, please bury me by the side of the road where I have fallen."

how can you possibly **** with this

Yeah, curiously, he seems a bit undergeared. At 120 rpms assuming 27 inch wheel size he'd only be doing 83. According to the article he had to do 180 rpms (three rotations per second) to hit his top speed. That's consistent with his pushing 220 gi, since he'd be doing 42 mph at 60 rpms and 42*3 is almost 130. (gotta love Sheldon's calculator!)

Edit: After reading tfa it says he was pushing 225.

but think about the effort it takes to get going fast enough to control that thing versus the effort it takes to spin really fast.
