Bike Polo

Many people on here into Bike Polo??

I've been trying to get as much info as I can, want to try and get a small group going myself, since we have nothing of this sort in my city (Ann Arbor).

Any pics of your setups?
Mallets?

Good advice on getting started in Bike Polo?

Bikes: Coppi racer, Old school BMX, some random a fixed wheel convertion

Over the summer we have got a good polo scene goning in London. Advertised on the London forum, word soon got around, play at the same place ever w/e. Keep it informal, random teams so it does not get all split up into regualr teams, don't take it too seriourly, start playing with anything, you don't need polo specific bikes any bike freewheel or fixed, one of our guys rides a Canondale concept frame (he built a polo bike but it was nicked grrr!), any mallet will do we started with golf clubs and hocky sticks, and lastly drink lotts of beer!

Gold clubs tend to break.

Ski poles are where its at.

And PE is stronger than PVC.

There's a few groups out in the midwest playing polo right now, and they are righteous hard-chargers (I'm lookin over at you, chicago!) If you're into traveling, you should hit up one of them to get the full treatment and an answer for your every question.

You can check flickr for reference photos to see what folks are using. Here's a few shots courtesy of our great guests from Boston!
Or better yet, quite a few polo scenes have myspace pages.

Here's a previous BFSSFG thread where people discuss their polo-riding setups

A quick briefing: If you ride fixed/fw you wanna ride a low ratio. smallest chainring and the biggest cog you can find. a rear brake will help. you want to be able to sprint, maneuver and still be durable.

For mallets: go to a salvation army/goodwill and buy ski poles. Aluminum, not carbon. Golf clubs break quickly. Mallet heads need something stronger than white PVC. it breaks and frags everywhere. Some people use broom handles and wooden heads. depends on your taste.

Go to a sporting goods shop and buy a franklin street hockey ball. they vary in hardness. get the hardest one (I think it's the red cold-weather ball. do not get the orange soft ball).

...most of the above relates to hard-court bike polo. If you play polo on grass, the bikes, the ball, even the sticks are different.

Good luck getting it off the ground over there. Have fun!

yeah, we were unable to find any ski poles. probably has something to do with our location. Golf clubs, particularly woods seemed to work fine for us, though. pvc held up okay, as well, although it certainly wasn't the best material to use. I'm sure our games were much less intense, though.

Bikes: so many

We play on a soccer field with MTBs round here. I ride an old Schwinn MTB that's all bike polo'ed out as a single speed with nashbar trekking bars and both brake levers on the left side. We use commercially available mallets and balls, but I don't know where they were purchased. I'm not sure I would want to play in a parking lot, we crash A LOT.

Not at student of UofM, i go to eastern, but if you're from A2 you know where it is.
I live up in Kerry Town, and ride a converted Miyata 310.

I have Wheeler Park just down the street which has a basketball court that would be good for some urban bike polo, and also in the park there is a paved oval track (good for fun little races) that has a grassed infield which would be good for some bike polo on grass.

Yeah I've always wondered why polo seems to be mainly on paved **** now. It seems like it would take the fun out of it.

Gotcha.

Well if this ever turns into anything, I'm in.

There's not a bike co-op in AA on E. Univ so I'll run it by some people next time I'm there.

You going to Critical Mass?

Bikes: A few

I would be up for bike polo. I could probably rustle up at least one more if not than that for it as well. For pavement polo I think it would be best to find a tennis court or something with at least a curb around it or a fence. Without either you are going to be chasing down the ball often.

The polo you hear about here is, but there are organized polo clubs all over the country that play on grass. If a bunch of fixed gear riders are going to get together and play, chances are it'll be on pavement.
