Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? scam?

I am considering buying a fixie off of bikesdirect.com. The saying "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is" keeps coming to mind. Am I going to actually receive a bike in the mail, if I order one from this website? I got burned on ebay before for some electronics stuff and so am wary of these things. Thanks in advance for some honest answers.

I think that Bikes Direct has the best deals going on just about every type of bike, for every level of rider. There are a few complaints about the quality of the bottom brackets, the wheels, etc., but these are things that need to be replaced on every entry-level bike, after time.

Seriously though, just do a search, and see how many threads there are about this topic. In fact, there's a length "Mercier Kilo TT Pictures" thread which discusses the merit of this bikedirect.com bike (if that's the one you're considering).

I've never been scammed in buying hundreds of things off eBay and other parts of the interweb. Basic prudence is all it takes. Becoming paranoid that you're going to be ripped off is a disservice to yourself.

Please,
Unless you are a bike mechanic please take your newly aquired internet bike to a LBS to have it properly assembled and adjusted (i.e. adjusting hubs, truing wheels, greasing things, etc.) And also have your LBS make sure it fits you properly.

yup. they're great and easy to deal with but you should have a local shop build it for you if you have any reservations about building it to spec. don't ride an unsafe bike.
