08' Jamis Sonik.

Has anyone seen this bike. I stopped by the LBS today and got some build prices on a bianchi pista concept, and the guys mentioned this bike as another option. Jamis has it listed in their website in the 08 catalog, this bike is bad ass. Black Omnium crankset, american classic track clincher wheel set.. just to name a few parts. This bike would be my race bike for next track season, but i was just wandering if anyone had seen on knew anything about this bike. Oh, the msrp. was $1399 which is not too outrageous.

* i just checked the american classic website and the msrp on the wheelset is $799 so that makes the complete bike look like an even better deal.

Thanks, JDB

That framset looks awesome.

boroSS 10-22-07 04:58 PM

It's loosely based off their TT frame, so it should ride plenty stiff.

The bike is not a bad deal, save for the wheels. AM classic track wheels, as light as they are, are limited to 120psi max pressures--and that's not taking into consideration the possibility of pressures increasing due to braking since these are actual track wheels. A 120psi limit makes me wonder how strong the actual rim is...and 120psi is pretty useless for track.

1399 isn't a huge jump from the estimated 1295 msrp i seem to recall seeing in photos from interbike or something. all in all it's roughly comparable to a pista concept/alu pista or T1, and a formidable contender at that. would be nice to see some ellipses.

Isn't 120 pretty much the maximum for clinchers? You'd want tubulars if you were more serious anyways.

shapelike 10-22-07 10:07 PM

Naw, I've seen some Eurotrash clinchers that can run up to 160psi (no thanks).

No_Minkah 10-23-07 09:38 AM

Can anyone link to some pictures or information? I can't find anything through Google.

And 120 PSI is perfectly suitable for most tracks.

goldenskeletons 10-23-07 09:49 AM

jamis makes quality bikes and i'm pretty stoked on this one here.

also, i won't ride anything higher than 120psi on my tubulars at kissena, but that's because that track knows more about crack than Ol Dirty *******.

...zing!

No it's not.

baxtefer 10-23-07 11:00 AM

120psi is pretty much the "limit" for most clincher rims. even Open Pros.

Hmm, idk. That seems really high. Since road racers use carbon rims and often clinchers, that sounds like a terrible combination.

here is a pic for the lazy....

it does look like a nice ride.

i think you were looking at a different wheelset. I've seen the track clincher wheelset for $399 online...and that is for 3x front and rear lacing whereas the Sonik's wheelset is 2x rear (24 hole) and radial front (20 hole). The configuration is similar to the Mavic Ellipses. However, I've heard that American Classic wheels are known to be flimsy/flexy. Makes sense...they're very light. The one thing that I wonder about is this: Why would Jamis go through the trouble of making such a stiff bike (stiff frame with a super stiff crankset) and then put on flimsy wheels??? maybe they aren't so bad.

No it's not. Although it really does depend on the specific tire/rim combo. But in general 120psi... is going to be nowhere near blowoff.

To appeal to hipsters who don't know better of course. Aerodynamics owns weight almost 99% of the time.

It's not. Veloflex clinchers are rated on the side of their tire (buy veloflex) 130-145 psi. You can certainly be guaranteed that the blowoff pressure is going to be much, much higher for liability reasons.

What do you mean aerodynamics owns weight? I'm confused. the american classics are aerodynamic and really light. I wonder how much better mavic ellipses are. maybe i'll swap them out for those or build up a set of wheels.

sfcrossrider 02-22-08 03:54 PM

There is a good chance I'll be racing one this year (I'm also looking at a FELT F2). If I get one I'll post a review of how it rides.

Nblinko10 03-06-08 11:06 PM

Well, I officially bought mine today. It is absolutely gorgeous. The lines on this bike are amazing. The only thing I want to change is the stem, saddle, and wheelset. I'll post some pictures soon.

fixedup 03-07-08 07:20 AM

jealous!

Pretty sure I recently read on the Mavic site that all of their rims are rated to 160psi

Nblinko10 03-07-08 06:12 PM

Yeah, I had to swap the A.C's out for Mavics now. This way I can sell the ACs as "never been ridden" etc. I was actually pretty impressed with the ACs when i saw them. The rims are quite deep and the hubs looked really decent too. I just couldn't help myself on the Ellipses though. They have such a good track record....pardon the pun. har har

ps.

Thanks!

Is that your house or a gallery?

Nblinko10 03-07-08 06:52 PM

Its my work. I am the gallery director for a modern design gallery in Denver, CO. www.zmodern.com

...I wish it was my house

TimArchy 03-09-08 02:57 AM

How do you feel about that dual position seatpost? Seems like it'd get on my nerves sticking out the back like that.

willypilgrim 03-09-08 10:25 AM

Damn i was gonna say nice 670/671, even though i don't typically like that color.

tjayk 03-09-08 11:16 AM

And I was gonna say damn you must be loaded - if that is your apartment.

Nblinko10 03-10-08 01:16 AM

The dual position seatpost did catch me off-guard i must say...but I wasn't going to let anyone else buy that bike out from under me because of that. I'll probably contact jamis at some point and ask about availability of the other post...you know...the one they SHOW it with.

about the 670 and 671 it is the 50th anniversary edition. They don't make them in rosewood anymore because it isn't considered "green" to use rosewood...which is true. the white leather actually grows on you after a while.

I am far from loaded. I am just a poor little industrial design student who runs a gallery full of kick ass designs of which I only own a small number of.

back to the bike:

this bike accelerates like nothing I've ever ridden. Its just fast. I cannot WAIT to take it out on the velodrome in Colorado Springs this summer.

It also came with true track tires that are super thin and soft. I'd say they are only good for 500 miles...on an INDOOR TRACK. The stem leaves little to be desired as well. Just ordered my 100mm 17 degree +/- Thomson X2 to solve that. The saddle is absolute garbage too. gar-bage. Its sooo cheap. got an SLR on the way

also, for any of you who are still interested after an already long post...the down tube is very very thin tubing. very thin. they get away with it being so thin because of the shape, which is almost triangular or diamond shaped ,and the size of the tube. Just...don't crash.

the long and the short is this: the bike is super f'ng stiff and light. the whole bottom bracket area combined with the crankset means serious power transfer. like i said, this bike accelerates like nuts. the replaceable steel dropouts are nice.

if anyone has any other questions about this bike let me know. I know its hard to find anything about it online so I'll try and help anyone who is interested in the bike. I'll try and take better pictures too once i have the steerer tube cut down w/ the bars lowered and with the new stem & seat.

willypilgrim 03-10-08 12:13 PM

i don't think i could rock the white leather, but i can appreciate it in the right setting for sure.
