I've got fenders, studded inova 700x30c tires, 1" threadless fork with canti posts, 1" threadless headset and stem, and some nice platform pedals. I just have to decide what frame to put it all on and decide on a drivetrain. I'm probably going to go with a 3 speed coaster on my old Peugeot. I also have some new knee warmers, a new balaclava, new semi cold weather gloves, 3 pairs of wool socks, 2 wool jerseys, and 3 pairs of newly made knickers (1 wool, 2 cotton) along with everything that got me through last winter. I've been preping for a couple months now, I'm gonna be pissed if we have a mild winter.
Oh yeah, I just started growing in my winter beard too!

On the low end, I've built my P8 with cross tires and a 42x18 ratio. As well as a brake, maybe another when I get more cable.

Yesterday was sunny and 24C. Tomorrow is going to be 8 degrees. I'm going with full fenders and the largest CX tires that will fit in the frame of my rain bike. Once it really gets cold (near to well below freezing) I start wearing a windproof/waterproof (gore-tex and the like) jacket and pants. Both fit loose enough that I can fit a few layers underneath depending on the condition. Last year I rode with long scarves and beanies or toques but this year I'm gonna give a balaclava a shot. I'm also gonna have to find some more appropriate handwear as the down-filled leather mittens I used last year with risers don't work so well with the super comfortable drops I'm running now.

For feet, I snagged a pair of one size big mountain bike shoes and a thrift store and plan on using some nice thick wool socks with them. I'm going to make some booties out of vinyl or something to stop the wind and weather.

You guys could learn a thing or 2 from the Chinese & Mexican delivery guys in NYC...
Plastic bag on the seat - keeps it dry and also hides a decent seat from thieves.
Plastic bag over the grips & brake handles - windproof & dry.
A piece of plastic, aluminum, plywood, house-siding, skateboard, plexiglass or anything that can be cut into an approx 30"x5" chunk that is duct-taped, wired, glued, riveted, hose-clamped to the back of seat post to make a fender!
Same thing for the front.
....Winterized bike for less than one dollar!!!!

I'm not sure I'll cahnge anything on my fixed gear, but I have been thinking about some cross tires for it. I already put some bullhorns on which I gotta say I love so far. I think when the real bad weather starts to fall (snow, ice, etc.) I'll jump on the single speed mtb and skid that mutha all around town with one foot on the ground!

here's mine, will post more later:
Just finished it.
*Fixed Gear Surly Cross-Check
*Kona Riser bars made for downhill, but I like the wide grip options.
*Front Disk Brake. I don't feel disk in the back is necessary with FG
*Love my San Marco Regal white saddle
*white track grips
*Luggage rack to put all my gear into. I'd like to ride without any bag on my back.
*May add fenders.
* Surly hub rear, Ultegra front.
* Mavic Open Pro rims
*Black DT Swiss spokes, gold nipples to add to the rivets on the saddle.
* last but certainly not least, studded Nokian tires.

Why, because my name Cafiero has caused you to assume that I am Italian with dark olive skin and that I have no business riding a bike with a white saddle and white grips? Well you are wrong because I am Albino.
OK not Albino, but I expect them to turn grey, which is also OK because the frame is grey.
I have never liked shoes that look brand-new, so I could care less about my saddle and track grips. It's fun for now.

I have 700x35c Nokian Hakkapeliitta W106's and they are great in ice and snow, but they ride like wet concrete. I try to delay putting them on as long as possible.
Also, fenders.
You're going to get spot rust on your chain and cog. Cope and clean the **** out of it. Salt eats bikes.
Also also, if you're a sick **** and ride below 20°F you're going to want to change to a thinner lubricant. Things act very interestingly when it's well below freezing. And personally I prefer to have my bicycle behave in a very boring, predictable manner.

My winter prep list:
Put my nice bike away. (pista)
Take out the old schwinn world. It lives outside in the winter, I don't really wash it other than throwing it in the snow. I just try to keep it frozen... taking it inside is too big of a mess and the water gets into everything and then freezes when it goes back outside, a pain in the butt. I just pull all the bearings out once a year and clean all the grime and junk out of the hubs/bb/headset.

conti 4-season have surprisingly good grip in snowy/slushy conditions.
Like with any narrow tire, once you can't cut down to the pavement, things start to get sketchy, and sheet ice is bad with anything but studs, but for 23c tires on plowed streets, the contis are pretty good. some other tire co makes tires with rice bran in the rubber, which seems like it might also add some grip, but i don't remember the company.

I just finished setting up my jamie roy with some cross tires (had to switch back to the stock fork). I have two sets of the mavic & formula wheels, so I have one set up with slick 23mm tires and 46x16 for wet slush, then I have these with 35mm tires and 46x17. That way, I can just switch wheels (and fenders) depending upon what is on the road. I also usually use some wider bullhorns when the conditions get sketchy.
If this winter is anything like the last, I'll surely have to get some studs as well.
