I am new to this forum and was wondering if there is a single speed disc option. I have an old racer and am looking to make it my own . thanks

when you say "disc" there are two potential meanings.

if you mean disc brakes then yes, it's quite easy. you can just run a single cog on a multispeed (disc compatible) freehub along with a lot of spacers. this is how a lot of ss mountain bikers do it.

i've also seen an adaptor that screws onto the opposite side of a flip flop hub that has attachments for a disc rotor. kind of a neat idea, but i have no idea how well they work and i forget who makes them.

they also make singlespeed specific disc brake hubs, so that's another option but in general you're gonna pay more for the equivalent quality and weight of a multispeed hub.

some can be ss, some can't, but i'm really not the guy to answer that question.

The Surly Fixxer will turn any freehub into a fixed gear. It does however cost more than a lot of good fixed hubs.

AFAIK, Phil Wood makes the only fixed/Disc hub. and it costs ~$300.

Yes but unless you are doing a single speed time trial for some bizarre reason you are an idiot for wanting one.

If you want a disc wheel just for the bling, go for it. For actual street riding though they're pretty silly. If you find one it might be expensive, heavy, or fragile. Also most of them are tubular which has it's tradeoffs.

Here's mine, it was super cheap at the cost of being extremely heavy and only freewheel threaded, almost totally useless overall.



There's a photo of a Panasonic keirin bike with a polished aluminum disc which is absolutely beautiful (aside from the hideous geometry of the frame). Aluminum discs are pretty rare and valuable though.
