Warning: This is not an answer to your question.
Note that, if you have not yet bought a bike, and if you want to run wide tires, Specialized offers the Tricross Singlecross.
Thank you, and good night.

Thanks, but its for a friend who already has one. He wants to do a cross race on Sunday with it.
I think I'm just going to talk him into borrowing him one of my hardtail MTBs
Tricross looks sweet!

Bump:
He did a cyclocross race in Lowell Ma. today fixed on the Langster with a cross fork, a 30mm cross tire on front and a 25mm road tire on back.
I rode my Trek 750 fixed with 34mm cross tubulars.

He did great! (beat me
) He runs a three hour marathon so I have no shame.
There was a soft muddy climb and he said it was no problem. He did go down drifting around one corner. He said he was about 20th in a 100 person field. I was about 65th.
He ran a slick tire on the back.
Any of you Doodz know of a 28mm tire with an aggressive tread?
