What kind of gearing do folks like for racing like that?

75 inches on the canheroindale, but i think it's a tad bit too low. i think the wheelies were caused by the sheer power of my legs, causing Funny car style torque effects. that and the bike weighs of a feather.

actually that's not that uncommon when you're starting a sprint from a dead start. Granted, it certainly isn't good form, but i think this thread was started as an acknowledgment of that.

an inch or too yeah. a foot??? Either he has no ****ing clue how to ride a bike and was a danger to his opponent or he was doing it on purpose.

nathbdp 11-08-07 09:36 PM

I don't have a clue how to ride a bike. Hence the "jackass hipster" moniker.

Oh I missed this. It has nothing to do with the weight of the bikes front end nor the sheer power of your legs. It's cause you are leaning as far back as you can, pulling up as hard as you can on the bars and probably not at all on your back foot. If you weren't doing that intentionally have really never sprinted from a red light or any other standing start? It doesn't take much to realize that you have to balance over the bike(**** I doubt being that far back even feels comfortable) you have no place racing.

Just admit it was intentional and kind of a jackass move and move on. Trust me the alternative is much more embarrassing.

mander 11-08-07 09:59 PM

Jeeze dutes, that's a bit much even for you.

True, I also take my hands off the bars before I cross the finish like, Theo Bos style.

I like to have "Werewolves of London" playing in the background, to which I coordinate my style moves. His hair was perfect. Then there's the older gentleman trying to tame my skills into more productive ends.

Taken out of context that is an amazing quote

He had a really stupid idea and decided to go through with it.
Then he posted a picture about it.
Finally he decided that maybe he could pawn it off as a mistake.

There is no ****ing way your wheel comes that far off the ground as part of an accidental hop especially with clipless unless you have literally never done any sort of standing start before. I don't know if he was always planning to pretend it was a mistake or if the idea only came to him from golden skeletons but he deserved to be called on it.

The holder just looks scared.

This is funny because I was there, and I know Mr NathBDP in real life, and I know for a fact that you are just wrong. He did that little hop accidentally, probably out of lack of experience with standing starts.

Way to be some jerk on the internet. :p

These are just super-casual monday night races. Times for the 200M vary from 19.something to 15.something.

I still think it's far more likely he did it on purpose and then played it off as an accident but if that truly is the case he has no business racing a couple feet away from someone till he gains some semblance of control over his bike. The more casual the race the less justification you have for riding dangerously around others.

possible thought process:
hahaha people are hopping there wheel a little as they start.
Man it would be funny as **** if someone did a wheelie like a motorcycle drag race.
That someone could be me people would laugh and think I was cool.
Oh **** I almost crashed but that was awesome.
Wait why is everyone acting like that was really sketchy.
I better pretend it was an accident.

SamHouston 11-09-07 10:04 AM

If your holder (or rider, who knows? in this instance) doesn't know what the hell is up it's possible to fly off like that, or break a chain.

I had a holder once, instead of holding the seatpost fingers open so the bike would slide out on acceleration he had it in a deathgrip fist closed, gun goes, legs activate, faster than he released and BanG, broken chain FTL. In a CMWC final no less. I cant see my seatpost looking up a hill ready to sprint, but I know my trackstand is good enough that I didn't think he was gripping, just supporting, but no, deathgrip was activated.

I hadn't even wanted a holder but everyone else had one. I did well in the heats so it wasn't a complete loss, except teh part where I lost completely in the final.

Did a terrible wheelie (no holder, all me) on the start of a heat, made my legs fly off all crazy and had to get it together and sort of restart after, everyone else had long pulled away buy 3-4 seconds. It worked out though because the sprint was uphill and the other riders hadn't known/prepared with proper gearing? or were ust slow, but uphill was a surprise for some. Anyway I got my bike back beneath me, clipped in and went thinking it was all over, but the all 3 guys in front of me seemed slo-mo stretched in a line, so I slalomed them as I went up the hill and won.

Oh to be fast again, and yeah, I was on a road bike facing fixies on an uphill sprint.

Yoshi 11-09-07 10:06 AM

I think you're taking this way too seriously dutret. I too was there and know John and believe him when he says it was an accident. It also never came off as sketchy. I absolutely agree with you - he needs to learn how to handle his bike during a standing-start sprint. But at no point was there anything close to an accident and once he got moving there were no more control issues.

dutret, do you write fan fiction?

@ dutret: What good is being right when you always end up looking like more of a jackass than the people you call out?

"you have no place racing"

hey NYC guys, you gotta cancel the monday night sprints. i know it was fun, but dutret called and said you're doin' it wrong. cease and desist immediately.

I don't see what my novella, stargate to the cling film factory, has to do with some guy pulling a wheelie and trying to pretend it was an accident.

You don't have to cancel any sprints just people who can't prevent pulling their wheel more then a foot off the ground and turning it to one side when starting just need to exclude themselves from partaking until they can avoid that. To be fair I honestly don't think that is what happened here as I have said clearly.
